A full point Saturday and a high scoring loss on Sunday marked the weekend results of the senior sides.

The 1st XI showed their resilient side to battle to a win over Irby at The Beets. Batting first on a deck which gave unexpected help to the bowlers, we were indebted to a pair of 50 partnerships, between Charles Erasmus and Charlie Eaton, and Mike Roberts and Tom Scott, which helped us recover from the loss of early wickets. A bit of tail wagging helped us post 159, which looked more than enough when we reduced Irby to 34-6, thanks to a great opening burst from Kris Green and James Marshall, and some excellent catching in the slips. A few shivers down the spine then followed as Irby recovered, before Zaheer Khan took out their top scorer thanks to a running, diving boundary catch by Harris Yassin. The 36-run win takes the 1s to the top of the table ahead of two massive games in the coming weeks.

The 2s got back to winning ways with an away demolition of Ashley. Batting first, we produced a fine effort with all the order contributing to a fine score of 230-6 off our 50 overs. Sam Thozerโ€™s 44 and Chris Smithโ€™s 43 were no doubt the highlights but all the other batters reached double figures. In reply Ashley had no answer to our bowling line up, with Joe Middleton and Will Sarchet knocking the top off the order before spin twins Ethan White and Yousuf Bhamjee both took 2 for 19 to secure a huge 144 victory. The result steadied the ship for the Twos who will be looking to press on as the season approaches itโ€™s half way point.

With the 3s taking a break, Sunday saw the 4s taking the spotlight as they travelled to Styal. In a high scoring encounter, we posted a fine 200-7 off our 40 overs, with 50s for Tom Cutler and Mo Shadaan, which looked a tough target for the home side to chase. In a tightly fought contest, the game ebbed and flowed but some hitting by the lower order got Styal over the line for the loss of 8 wickets with 12 balls to spare. The young bowling attack we had in this game stood up well to the challenges of the game and we are proud of how all these players are developing this year.

๐Ÿ Onto the weekend cricket..

The weekend sees 3 matches for the senior sides as the mighty 3rd XI take a rest from league action.

The 1s host Irby at The Beets at the start on an important three weeks against teams at the upper end of the table. Irby left the Cheshire pyramid after the 2022 season, rejoining in 2025. They won their division and were promoted to our league for the 2026 season. They are 6th in the league and will be a hard team to beat having run league leaders Heaton Mersey close a couple of weeks ago. If we win this one, it will reinforce our claims as promotion contenders. This could be a cracker.

The 2s will be looking to get back to winning ways as they travel to Ashley on Saturday. Ashley are 2nd from bottom in the league after some narrow losses, and they seem to be happier at home than away. We have dropped to 6th in the league and this would be a good one to win and start our bounce back.

With the 3s on a rest weekend Sunday belongs to our 4th XI who travel to Styal. Styal lie 2nd in the league, one place above us. The 4s will be looking to shake off last weekโ€™s loss and get back to winning ways in this promotion chasers clash. Finger crossed that our younger players can once again show that substance will always beat Styalโ€ฆโ€ฆ..

FRIDAY NIGHTS & FOOTBALL MATCHES

If you attend the club on busy summer Friday evenings or World Cup games please take a moment to read this important update.

Many of you will recall that, at the start of the season, we shared guidance regarding the supervision of children on Friday evenings. Thankfully, there have only been a small number of issues so far this season. However, following several incidents at Junior Night last Friday and at the England v Croatia game last night (also involving children) we feel it is necessary to politely remind both members and visitors of the Club's Code of Conduct.

Please remember that the Club is run almost entirely by volunteers and operates on a very limited budget. At the top of our social media page, you'll find the pinned notice we published in mid-May. We would ask all Friday evening visitors to ensure they have read and understood it.

In particular, we would like to stress that the Club is not a crรจche or supervised play scheme. Unfortunately, we do not have the volunteers, resources or qualifications to provide childcare. All children remain the responsibility of their parents or carers at all times while on Club premises.

Examples of behaviour observed last week at junior night included young children standing on and swinging from the doors of the storage area beneath the score-box, and using the structure as football goals. These doors were expensive to install and repair costs place additional strain on the Club's finances. There were also boisterous ball games taking place inside the function room, which was refurbished last year at a cost of ยฃ6,000, and children using the cricket covers on the wet square as a climbing frame. There were also groups of teenagers who then re-appeared at the England game - moving outdoor tables, playing football near the square, moving bins, generally being a nuisance - culminating in kicking a ball into an adultโ€™s face, causing damage & distress. Not a single parent was supervising this large group.

We would also remind parents and carers that it is important to know where their children are at all times. Due to the Club's location, the site is open to the riverbank and other public areas, so it should be treated with the same level of awareness and supervision as any other public space. This INCLUDES all under 16โ€™s - groups of unaccompanied teenagers without a junior cricket membership.

We are proud to be a welcoming and family-friendly Club, and we want everyone to continue enjoying Friday evenings and the World Cup with us. At the same time, we need to ensure that everyone remains safe and that our facilities are treated with respect so they can be enjoyed by all.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Weekend match reportsโ€ฆ.

It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for our senior sides with wins for the 1s and the 3s and losses for the 2s and the 4s.

The 1st team had a successful trip to Mobberley despite roadworks meaning a round the houses journey through the backroads of rural Cheshire. Opting to bowl first, we had the hosts in deep trouble at 74-8 with Charles Erasmus and Charlie Eaton in the wickets. A great counterattack by Mobberley skipper Ben Wood got the home team back in the game before Charlie forced an error to make Ben one of his 5 wickets in the innings.

Batting contributions from the top order allowed us to post a 5 wicket win chasing down 133 in 33 overs. Not our best performance but the win keeps us 2nd in the table.

The 2s recent disappointing form continued as they went down to defeat at The Beets against Upton. Our batting failed after being put in by our guests with only 49 from Chris Smith giving our innings any form of respectability.

A total of 102 was never going to be enough and Upton crossed the winning line in under 25 overs. Our highlight was the 2nd team debut of Ethan White who bowled a tidy 6 over spell to take 2 for 18. With Max Lilley taking 1-17 off his 5 overs the young spinners of Ashton give us hope for the future.

On Sunday the mighty 3s put another win on the board as they showed great strength to defeat Stockport Trinity despite some struggles with the bat. Being asked to bat first we spluttered to 136 all out with that total owing a lot to a last wicket stand of 27 between Anirudh Anil and Ragesh Purushothaman.

But even that modest total was not enough as our bowlers came to the fore, blowing away the hosts for 113. A great win for the lads as they keep their top of the table spot for yet another week,

The 4s winning streak came to an end at home to Urmston, although not before we saw even more evidence of the young talent at the club. Urmston ran up 191-6 with wickets shared across the bowlers. In reply we fell behind the run rate and never really looked like chasing down the target. But Ethan Whiteโ€™s second game of the weekend saw him show talent with the bat as well as the ball, finishing on 48 not out as we were bowled out for 156.

A weekend with many positives to take forward to the coming matches
