What does a Soft Tissue Therapist actually do?

There can sometimes be a misconception that Soft Tissue Therapy is simply about having a sports massage or making a tight muscle feel looser.

But there’s much more to it.

A good Soft Tissue Therapy session starts with understanding you — what you’re feeling, what movements or activities are affected, your training or work demands, and ultimately what you want to get back to doing.

From there, treatment can use a range of hands-on and movement-based techniques to help:

• Reduce pain and discomfort
• Improve movement
• Reduce feelings of stiffness
• Support recovery
• Build confidence with movement

And you certainly don’t have to be an athlete to benefit.

One of the most important parts of my role is also recognising when Soft Tissue Therapy isn’t the answer. Working alongside physiotherapists, sports doctors, S&C coaches and other healthcare professionals means treatment can form part of a much bigger picture.

For me, every treatment should have a goal:

Assess → Treat → Reassess → Progress

Soft Tissue Therapy isn’t about simply chasing tight muscles.

It’s about understanding the person in front of you and using the right approach to help them move towards their goals.

**"HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE A SPORTS MASSAGE?"**

My answer?

**It depends.**

And that's not me avoiding the question!

Someone training several times a week for an event may have completely different needs from someone who wants help with an occasional ache after work.

Frequency can depend on:

• Why you're having treatment
• Your activity levels
• Training demands
• How you're responding
• Your goals
• Whether treatment is actually helping

I don't believe everyone needs a massage every week, fortnight or month simply because that's what's been recommended before.

Sometimes you'll need a few appointments.

Sometimes you'll need one.

Sometimes you might not need treatment at all.

**Your treatment plan should fit you – not a subscription.**

**WHY DOES YOUR THERAPIST NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU DO FOR WORK?**

It might seem like a strange question when you've come in because your shoulder, back or legs are bothering you.

But your working day gives me useful information.

Do you sit for long periods?

Drive regularly?

Spend all day on your feet?

Perform repetitive movements?

Have a physically demanding job?

Your treatment isn't just about what you do in the gym or on the running track.

What you do during the other 8–10 hours of your day matters too.

That's why one of the first things I want to understand is what a normal week actually looks like for you.

**Your lifestyle gives us context.**

And context helps us make better treatment decisions.

**EVERY TREATMENT SHOULD HAVE A GOAL**

Before I start treatment, there's one thing I want to know:

**What do you want to achieve?**

Because everyone's answer is different.

🏃 "I want to run without my calf tightening."

🏋️ "I want to get back to training."

💻 "I want my neck to feel better after work."

🚶 "I want to walk further without feeling uncomfortable."

⚽ "I want to be ready for the weekend."

Your goal helps determine the treatment.

That's why I don't believe in simply performing the same routine on everyone who walks through the door.

We assess.

We treat.

We reassess.

And, where appropriate, we make a plan for what happens next.

Because ultimately, treatment isn't about what happens on the massage table.

**It's about what treatment helps you do away from it.**

**WHAT DOES A SOFT TISSUE THERAPIST ACTUALLY DO?**

It's more than simply giving you a massage.

When someone comes to see me, I'm interested in the bigger picture.

I'll want to know:

🔎 What are you experiencing?

⏱ How long has it been happening?

🏃 What activities do you do?

💻 What does your working day look like?

📈 Has anything recently changed?

🎯 What do you want to achieve?

Where appropriate, I'll also look at your movement before deciding how treatment might help.

Treatment itself may then involve a combination of different soft tissue techniques depending on what we find and how you respond.

And sometimes the most useful thing I can give you isn't another massage.

It might be advice, an exercise or recommending that you speak to another healthcare professional.

**Treatment should always have a reason behind it.**

That's the approach I bring to every appointment.

**WHEN SHOULD YOU BOOK A SPORTS MASSAGE?**

Do you wait until something hurts before booking treatment?

You don't necessarily need to.

There are several reasons people come to see me:

✔ You're feeling stiff or restricted.

✔ Your training volume has increased.

✔ You're preparing for an event.

✔ You're recovering from a hard period of training.

✔ Something doesn't feel quite right when you move.

✔ You've developed an ache that keeps returning.

✔ You simply want to look after your body.

There also isn't a perfect schedule that works for everyone.

Some people benefit from occasional treatment during particularly demanding periods.

Others might need a short period of more regular treatment before gradually reducing the frequency.

It depends on **you, your body, your training and your goals.**

And if I don't think you need another appointment?

I'll tell you.

The aim is never to make someone dependent on treatment.

It's to help you move well and manage your body confidently.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE AN ATHLETE TO BENEFIT FROM SOFT TISSUE THERAPY

One misconception I'd love to change is that Sports Massage and Soft Tissue Therapy are only for athletes.

They're not.

Yes, I work with athletes, runners and people who train regularly.

But I also work with people who:

💻 Spend eight hours a day at a desk.

🚗 Drive for long periods.

🌱 Enjoy gardening at the weekend.

🚶 Want to keep walking comfortably.

👨‍👩‍👧 Have busy family lives.

🏋️ Go to the gym a couple of times a week.

Sometimes your goal isn't to run faster or lift heavier.

Your goal might simply be:

"I want my back to feel more comfortable when I get out of bed."

Or:

"I want to turn my head properly when I'm driving."

Those goals are every bit as important.

You don't need to be an athlete.

You just need a body that you want to keep moving.

WHY DOES THE SAME TIGHTNESS KEEP COMING BACK?

You've stretched it.

You've foam rolled it.

It feels better for a while...

Then a few days later, the same tightness is back.

Sound familiar?

Persistent tightness doesn't necessarily mean that a muscle simply needs more stretching or more massage.

There can be several things contributing to that feeling:

🏃 A change in your training load
💻 Spending long periods in the same position
🏋️ Fatigue from repeated exercise
😴 Not recovering sufficiently between sessions
🔄 How you're moving and loading the area

That's why I don't just want to know where you feel tight.

I want to understand when it happens, what you're doing when it happens and what might be contributing to it.

Soft tissue therapy can then form part of a wider approach that may include treatment, movement, exercise and changes to your recovery.

The aim isn't simply to make something feel looser for an hour.

It's to help you understand your body and keep doing the activities you enjoy.

Do Tight Muscles Always Need Stretching?

It's one of the biggest misconceptions I hear.

"Tight muscles must need stretching."

Sometimes.

But not always.

Muscles can feel tight because they're:

• Working too hard.

• Protecting another area.

• Fatigued.

• Reacting to increased training loads.

If you only stretch without understanding why they're tight, you may only get temporary relief.

The better question is:

What's causing the tightness in the first place?

That's where assessment and understanding your individual situation becomes so important.

👇

What's the muscle that always feels tight for you?

"What actually happens during a Soft Tissue Therapy appointment?"

Every session starts with a conversation.

I want to understand:

✔ What's been bothering you?

✔ When did it begin?

✔ What makes it worse?

✔ What makes it feel better?

✔ What are you hoping to get back to?

Where appropriate, we'll also look at how you're moving before deciding on the most suitable treatment.

No two people are the same.

That's why every treatment should be individual.

You'll never receive exactly the same treatment as someone else because your goals, lifestyle and body are unique.

Whether you're preparing for a race, returning to the gym or simply trying to feel more comfortable at work, the session is designed around you.
