Our Newsletter for April just went out. Here is an excerpt as we felt it was important to share.
"The boom in reformer Pilates has led to a “wild west” of poorly regulated studios, inexperienced teachers and rising injuries, professional bodies warn. Pilates, created by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century and called “contrology,” blends yoga, gymnastics and rehabilitation to boost core strength, posture and body awareness; it grew popular in the 1920s after Pilates moved to New York and taught dancers.
The problem is that “anyone in the UK can call themselves a pilates instructor without formal training. However, reputable studios and industry bodies expect instructors to have recognised certification, often covering mat work and anatomy.”
I take qualifications seriously. I trained at Bodymotion Studio in Germany (2015), chosen for its German Pilates Association (DPA) recognition. Over two years I completed beginner and intermediate matwork, anatomy, practice days, supervised teaching, logged studio practice, and passed final theory and practical exams.
I then taught in Toronto, mentored by Meaghan of Motiv Fitness & Pilates, where I improved my matwork, gained reformer training, and built experience teaching up to 16 classes weekly alongside early private sessions and evening group classes.
In 2021 I moved to Orkney and soon began teaching as Waypoint Pilates. Since then I’ve led a variety of mat classes across the islands, developed workshops & retreats, staying true to my training while always prioritising student safety and individual progress.
I also keep up with additional training, having most recently completed Body Control’s Pilates for Performance course. Learning and pilates is what I love and do, so when you come to class, please know I have truly done my time to serve you & this beautiful form of exercise."
