🌊 HDCC Beginners Pool Session – Week 1 🌊

What a fantastic start to our beginners’ course at the Penland Road pool this week!

Six enthusiastic paddlers joined us (with a strong showing from the ladies 👏) and the energy and engagement throughout the session was brilliant.

We began, as always, with the fundamentals — controlled capsize drills both with and without spray decks, including the all-important “bang on the hull” signal. Everyone approached it calmly and confidently, setting a solid foundation for the evening.

From there we moved into free paddling and introduced edging — and it was great to see how quickly the group began to understand how subtle boat tilt improves turning and control.

We then progressed to draw strokes, which were picked up incredibly well for a first session. Some really promising boat control already!

The only capsize of the evening came when we introduced a ball-throwing distraction exercise. Catching and throwing forces you to take your focus off the paddle — and it’s amazing how quickly balance changes when attention shifts. A great learning moment and lots of smiles all round.

A very positive start to the course — confident paddlers, supportive coaching, and strong foundations laid for the weeks ahead.

Well done everyone 👏🚣‍♀️

CPR & Incident Management Practice Night 🚑

Alongside our time on the water, we regularly run dry training sessions to prevent skill fade and keep everyone confident and capable. Continuation training really matters — whether that’s trip planning, radio communication, navigation, or emergency response. These are perishable skills, and we practise them deliberately.

This evening’s focus was high-quality CPR and coordinated incident management in a realistic beach setting — right where we actually launch and land.

We worked through cardiac arrest and drowning scenarios, reinforcing:

• Immediate leadership and clear role allocation
• 5 initial rescue breaths in suspected drowning
• Relentless focus on high-quality compressions (depth, rate, recoil, minimal pauses)
• Confident integration of our clubhouse AED
• Managing bystanders and scene distractions
• Accurate note-taking and preparation for handover

It was great to see communication and confidence improve as the evening progressed. Leadership became clearer, compressions stronger, and team coordination more structured.

A key takeaway: effective resuscitation isn’t just about technique — it’s about calm leadership, good teamwork, and maintaining compression quality until paramedics arrive.

Strong engagement from everyone involved 👏

Have your say on the future of our coastline!
One of our club members, who works on the Pevensey Bay to Eastbourne Coastal Management Scheme, is asking for help from fellow paddlers and the wider community.
🌊 The scheme is developing a long-term plan (looking ahead to 2125!) to respond to sea level rise and more frequent storms. This could lead to changes in how the coastline looks and is used — so they want to hear from locals, visitors, and especially kayakers and watersports users.
Your input will help shape how the coast is managed in the future.
