Portico Vine ARLFC

Portico Vine ARLFC Based in St Helens, Portico Vine Amateur Rugby League Club (ARLFC) is a community club, run entirely by volunteers.

Our volunteers work in partnership with the parents and carers of our young people to provide an environment that coaches, manages, supports, encourages and develops our club and brings together the wider community. Our clubs ethos is to instil respect, promote enjoyment, ensure inclusion and importantly, provide positive experiences to our young people through rugby league. In addition to these core values, we embed community cohesion into our young players and highlight the need to work with the community, for the community. At the very heart of our club is our aim to provide as many life enhancing opportunities as we can for our young people, broadening their horizons, raising their aspirations and ambitions, improve self-confidence and self-esteem, support their development as well as ensuring they enjoy taking part in physical activity and instil a love of being active, creating a healthier community. They can share their experiences, make new friends and all in the backdrop of rugby league. These newly acquired skills involving leadership, communication, teamwork, self-motivation and respect will set them up for a future helping others in the community. We believe every child has the right to shine and as one team, we will help them achieve their one dream. That was the sole motivation in the club acquiring funding to build a brand new clubhouse that was completed in May 2022 and opened up the opportunity to create a Community Hub.

Do you know of any other voluntary groups in Merseyside you believe should be nominated for the King’s Voluntary Award 2027?

We are immensely proud to have received such recognition in 2024, but we would like to share our knowledge and successes as we know there are so many other community clubs and groups that would be in with a great chance of receiving the same honour.

Our Chairman Mark Hobin MBE is working alongside Merseyside KAVS lead, Denise Barrett-Baxendale MBE DL and Helen Tanzey, Clerk of the Lieutenancy, on behalf of the Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside, Peter Oliver OBE this year to raise awareness of the King’s Award for Voluntary Service.

There are so many groups and organisations doing extraordinary things to better the lives of others across Merseyside, and we look forward to sharing our knowledge and experience to support others and representing our county.

If you are part of, or know a voluntary group you believe deserving to be nominated, please let us know and we will pass on to Hobes so we can do all we can to help.

🔰🔰U15’s Match Report 🔰🔰

Sadly, it wasn’t our day Sunday, but what a valiant effort from the 13 players who took to the field and gave absolutely everything for the Portico badge 💚💛

It was certainly a tough day at the office, but the team never gave up. Their attitude, determination and togetherness were fantastic from beginning to end. In the second half, the Panthers stepped things up and matched the opposition in every single area of the game, showing real character and fighting spirit.

The final result may not have gone our way, but every player should hold their head high and be extremely proud of that performance. They kept battling for one another until the final whistle—and that is what being part of a team is all about!

A special mention must also go to Alex and Quin, who both made their Portico debuts today. Neither of them took a backward step, and they fitted into the team brilliantly. Well done, lads—the first of many! 💪🏉

💚💛 U8s – A Great Morning of Rugby On Sunday 💛💚

What a brilliant morning of rugby for our U8s, who enjoyed some fantastic games against Clock Face and Hindley!

The whole team played incredibly well, showing great teamwork, determination and plenty of impressive passing, dodging and try-scoring. It was lovely to see everyone playing with smiles on their faces, supporting one another and putting everything they have been learning in training into their games.

A huge well done to all of our players—you did Portico Vine proud! 👏🏉

💚💛 U6s – Their First-Ever Games! 💚💛

Our little Panthers played their first games against Leigh East, Pilks and Leigh Miners—and they were all amazing!

Despite the pouring rain and playing against some older U6s, they showed lots of brilliant tag catching, fantastic dodging and some excellent try-scoring! 🏉🌧️

We are really pleased to announce that following the efforts of hosting our Junior Festival a few weeks ago…. a large portion of our club profits will be reinvested straight back into our junior sections with the purchase of a new club emblazoned gazebo with some added extras.

1 x Gazebo with fully zipped sides, logos on inside and outside.
2 x Flags plus water bases
2 x Table covers

This means that wherever we go locally, regionally, nationally and internationally on tour, or at festivals, the green and gold will shine proud. It will provide a sheltered facility during the less favourable autumn and winter months, but also stand tall as a recognisable feature.

Huge thanks to club Head Coach, Alex Manweiler for progressing, sorting and ordering, in addition to all those who contributed financially at our junior festival.

For transparency of our followers and on the back of some internal communications, we share the news that Diane ‘Lady Di’ Rotherham, will formally step down as our Clubhouse Manager on 31st Dec 2026.

We, as a club and community, would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Lady Di for everything she has done for our club over the years. Her commitment, hard work and dedication have played a huge part in the incredible growth and success of our club over the last decade. She has given countless hours to the club and made a lasting impact that we should all be incredibly grateful for - particularly over the last five years and been instrumental in our ratings from inspectors.

I hope you can all take the opportunity to thank Diane for everything she has done and wish her well following what I know has been a very difficult decision - one that we must all fully respect. I’m sure you’ll all join me in thanking Diane for her outstanding contribution to our club and wishing her every success for the future. She will forever remain a Lifetime Member 💚💛

Sue Skerry will temporarily take the role from 1st Jan 2027. A formal process will be advertised during our preparation for the AGM in February 2027.

Sue does have some knowledge of the role already which is advantageous, but she will link in with Diane over the next few weeks/months for the finer detail to be handed over to make things as smooth as possible.

You will possibly be mindful of how many roles Sue will hold in 2027, so with the resilience of the club in mind, but more so Sue’s own welfare, we will be meeting to discuss her capacity and capability to manage so many important roles, on and off the pitch.

Thankfully, Diane will remain a big supporter, helper and advocate of our club
