Pendragon Field Archery

Pendragon Field Archery Come and enjoy the North Wales Field Archery Experience. The targets also vary in size depending on the round being shot and the distance.

Field archery involves shooting arrows at targets but this is where the similarity to standard target archery ends. During a shoot archers will shoot at up to 40 different targets in sequence, shooting up to 3 arrows at each target. The field archery course is usually situated in woodland and the targets are all set at different un-marked distances. The targets may have to be shot up or down gradi

ents, at a variety of different distances or shooting angles. A selection of different rounds can be shot on the field course but the most commonly shot are the 'Field' and 'Hunter' rounds. In short, field archery involves a level of knowledge and intuition which has a greater effect on success than perhaps in any other form of archery. It is this challenge that attracts archers to field archery

Training and introduction to field archery courses: Before you can join a club and go out onto a course you will need to be trained and signed off by our Field Archery Coach. You will be trained in all aspects of field archery including health and safety, setting up your bow, shooting techniques and different bowstyles. Its a hands on course and after the initial safety briefing you will be shooting on the training range. The introduction to archery course of five hourly lessons cost £50. The lessons can be split over various weekends or completed in a one day block course. Once you have completed the full course and have been signed off by the coach you can join the club and the NFAS (National Field Archery Society) and shoot the 3d course whenever you like. One off hourly sessions can be booked for £10.00. Training is suitable for all ages, as the training is at our woods we do recommend wearing suitable clothing and footwear as it does tend to be a bit muddy.Training courses can also be purchased as gift vouchers by contacting the club.

The Rules of Field Archery: To keep it simple the targets are laid out in a course that uses the entire woodland so there is quite a bit of walking involved. There are usually either 36 or 40 targets. Each target will have a series coloured pegs to shoot from. You will have a maximum of three shots at each target. You take the first shot from the Red peg if you hit the target you score that arrow (depending on where you hit you can score 24, 20 or 16 points). if you miss the 1st shot you move onto the White peg and shoot again if you hit the target you score that arrow (depending on where you hit you can score 14 or 10 points). If you miss your 2nd shot you move onto the Blue peg and shoot again, if you hit the target you score that arrow (depending on where you hit you can score 8 or 4 points) if you miss the target from the blue peg you score zero and move onto the next target. Children shoot from a Yellow or Orange peg. See pic below which shows typical peg layout.

3D Targets..what are they? they are shaped targets made of self healing foam, they can be anything from a realistic 3D bear to a mystical 3D Dragon (And the occasional Zombie). The targets are placed at varying distance according to their shape and size. Each target will have scoring zones marked on to them.

There is a style and class of bow that suits everyone, from traditional longbows and flatbows to modern compound bows, recurve and crossbows. Most people new to archery learn on recurve bows and then choose a style that suits them once they have more experience.

What is Field Archery? Simply put, it is ordinary people shooting bows and arrows in beautiful woodland up and down the country, in woods we used to drive by wishing we could walk in. Field Archery is probably one of the safest, addictive and challenging sports about.

How does Field Archery Differ from Target Archery, Field archery courses are usually in woodland and will have between 36 and 40 targets which are either paper face animal targets or 3D foam animal targets. The targets are located at varying unmarked distances over varying terrain. Challenges like different weather conditions and adapting to variable light test the archer offering the ultimate archery experience.
