Got a shot on a hole or caddying for a golfer who has? There’s no need to take any risks.

On a par 5, your job is to get on the green in four and two putt. Anything better is a bonus.

Taking risks are what leads to amateurs shooting scores of 8+ on holes and ruining their scorecard and their round.

Punch out when you need to. Play the percentages. Two putt.

As a club caddie, if you get the golfer around the course under their handicap, you have done a great job and that does not require miracles. Just commitment to playing the right shot at the right time.

When caddying at an event like this, it is important to remember that whilst players do want to shoot a good score, the enjoyment of the day is the primary focus.

For example, the 12th hole at is not driver for most golfers, but there was an activation encouraging golfers to get as close to the water as possible.

The difference between caddying for a tour pro versus an amateur?

In theory, it should be the same. Your job is to get the golfer around the course in as few shots as possible. In practice, it is very different.

As explains here, the differences become apparent before you even step on the first tee, which is why we created two separate courses.

Club caddying could involve a very relaxed round, a business meeting or someone playing a bucket list golf course. Whereas on tour, your golfer is playing for their livelihood every single week.

People will always have different opinions on which is more challenging, as on tour, you have the assistance of statistics and caddying for the same golfer week in, week out.

As a club caddie, you have to remember that Golfers will have often have shots on a significant number of holes. Use them.

Your job is ultimately to get them around the golf course in as few shots as possible. Succeed and chances are they will be happy and incredibly complimentary.

Some golfers may be reluctant to leave the driver in the bag, but if they are really struggling on the range, it is definitely worth offering a different point of view and supporting that with statistics and reasoning.

How using a wind map can ensure you can practice the perfect number.

At the elite level, fine margins really do matter. If we can practice hitting a 156 yard shot ready for a par 3 that is the same orientation as the range, that is a huge advantage.

You can dial in a number and a club, ensuring your golfer can give themselves a great look at birdie, as you already know the impact the wind will have.

The biggest mistake most amateurs make? Hitting driver on every par 4.

Driver, for most golfers, is the least accurate club in the bag and if you’re club caddying, when golfers have a shot, a long iron will often result in a better outcome.

Explain your thinking without using negative language and keeping the driver in the bag for a couple of shorter holes will likely result in a much lower score and happier golfer.
