The level of the men and women playing at the very top of the game is truly astounding. Luckily, as caddies, we get a front row seat.

The truth is, this game is incredibly difficult and getting to +7/8 is tough (although easier with the new handicap system). Whilst we would all love to play golf for a living, sometimes it is not always possible.

The next best job? Caddying.

Travel the world working in the game you love? That sounds like a dream job to us.

Alongside the elements, fairway bunkers are often one of the key defences a links golf course has to offer. This is why Tiger Woods would avoid them at all costs.

A fairway bunker, especially for amateurs, can turn good par chances into bogey or worse very easily and it is generally due to poor planning.

A lot of golfers obsess about getting to the green of a par five in two shots and whilst that is a great aim to have, often fairway bunkers are perfectly placed within driver range.

If the hole is 500 yards and you hit driver 270, but there are three fairway bunkers ranging from 260 to 285, driver is not the play. Hit 3 wood, give yourself 250 to the flag and if you finish 10 or 15 yards short, you still have a great chance at birdie and an almost guaranteed par.

For the sake of gaining 30 yards, golfers will insist on hitting driver and risk making six or worse. But always remember, if you are laying up, lay up properly by taking the trouble completely out of play, even if you hit it perfectly.

The truth about player and caddie bust ups! πŸ‘€

Whilst serious arguments are few and far between, there will always be disagreements and debates on the golf course. When tensions are running high and there is so much as stake, whether that is a tour card or a significant amount of money, things can often boil over.

But the key is how you deal with these issues and move past them whilst continuing to do the best job possible.

A great story that has a real lesson hidden amongst the laughter.

The job as a caddie is far more than the job description may initially suggest. You are a golfer’s right hand man (or woman), moral support and friend.

Golf can be brutal and the margins are incredibly fine, so ensuring you are there for them personally goes an incredibly long way. That does not mean agreeing with everything they say in the fear of losing your job, it is understanding the person behind the golf and what really makes them tick.

Have you ever seen inside a caddie’s yardage book?

There is so much more than goes in to caddying than the lazy stereotype of β€˜bag carrier’. Sure, that is one part of the role but there is so much more to it.

Caddying for a pro for the first time? Getting their numbers with every club is the absolute priority and first port of call.

It is the base from which every other aspect of caddying feeds in to and without which you cannot do your job.

Some will have much more detail than others, including 75% and 50% shots with certain clubs, whereas others will be far more reliant on β€˜feel’. Your job is to get as many numbers as you can, whether than is by them providing them or assessing on the range with the use of a Trackman or similar device.

As tour caddies, we have made plenty of mistakes, which is why our tour course can help to prevent those before they even happen.

With decades upon decades on tour, we have seen it all and whether it is an issue with the weather or constantly checking to make sure a rogue club from the range has not made it’s way in to the bag, our tour course prepares you in the best way possible.
