I always offer help to stranded cyclists and just occasionally the offer is gratefully received. Today, in a COVID-safe, 2 metre distance sort of a way, I talked a cyclist through changing an inner tube. He is a step closer to riding with the sort of confidence you get from knowing that you are self reliant. There really is no substitute for being prepared to get your hands grimy and practising. Bring your bike in from the rain and have a go with this video as your guide.

On International Women's Day we'd like to celebrate the achievements of Beryl Burton - twice World Road Race Champion and five time World Pursuit Champion, with more than 90 domestic titles to her name. A Yorkshire housewife with no financial sponsorship or formal coaching, she overcame childhood ill health to become the first sportswoman to break a men's competitive record. This 12hr time trial record (277.25 miles) set in 1967 still stands for women and exceeded the men's record for 2 years. No surprise to learn that our very own Sian Brice was raised on the tales of this cycling hero. Beryl had a simple motto, 'Anything lads can do, I can do.'
