Saffron Opera Group was formed in 2013 and its inaugural performance was on September 14th 2014 at Saffron Hall. This concert performance of Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg was performed in German (with English titles), by a fabulous cast of professional soloists, the St Albans Symphony Orchestra and Saffron Opera Group Chorus, all conducted by Michael Thorne. Since then we've gone from strength to

strength adding most of Wagner's operas to our credits including a complete Ring Cycle, and also works by Mozart and Stravinsky.

GET TO KNOW THE CAST OF Der fliegende Holländer: Heading up our cast are Simon Thorpe as the Dutchman himself and Mari Wyn Williams as Senta, both of whom have sung with us before - and boy, these roles fit them like gloves! SOG audiences will have heard Simon as Kothner in last year's performance of Die Meistersinger, but he has many other Wagnerian roles in his repertoire too, including Wotan and Telramund, as well as major roles in the Italian canon including Scarpia and Falstaff. Mari last sang with us in Parsifal, as one of our flowermaidens and since then has emerged as one of the most exciting sopranos of her generation, singing the dramatic repertoire. As well as her Wagnerian roles, Verdi's Lady Macbeth is becoming something of a signature role for her. YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS !!

GET TO KNOW THE CAST OF Der fliegende Holländer: An SOG favourite and regular is BACK!!! Andrew Greenan has probably sung more roles with SOG than any other singer! It's a delight to have him back with us as Daland, Senta's father. You will remember his Wotan/Wanderer, Gurnemanz and of course Baron Ochs too as well as numerous other roles. In demand elsewhere in UK and internationally, Andrew has most recently sung Bernstein's On the Town in Japan, Swallow Peter Grimes with Bergen Philharmonic under Edward Gardner at both the Bergen and Edinburgh Festivals, The General The Gambler for the Festivale dalle Valle d'Itria in a new production by Sir David Pountney, and Baron Ochs at Lithuanian National Opera.

GET TO KNOW THE CAST OF Der fliegende Holländer. Returning to SOG after his success as Walther in Die Meistersinger last year, is Charne Rochford - one of Britain's most promising heldentenors. His performance as Erik with SOG marks an exciting role debut. GET TO KNOW THE CAST OF Der fliegende Holländer. Andrew Henley who will sing the Steuermann, is a tenor increasingly in demand for his vocal "refinement" and "lyrical elegance". He is the winner of the 2025 Pendine International Voice of the Future Award at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod, with repertoire including Don Ottavio, Nemorino, and the Britten roles of Novice in Billy Budd and Lechmere in Owen Wingrave. Andrew is also much in demand as a concert soloist and has sung at the Royal Festival Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Cadogan Hall and Southwark Cathedral amongst others. Andrew made his debut with SOG in Der Rosenkavalier and we are delighted to have him with us again for the Flying Dutchman.

GET TO KNOW THE CAST OF Der fliegende Holländer. Following her fantastic performance as Marcelline in SOG's Le Nozze die Figaro, we are delighted to welcome back YVONNE HOWARD to sing the role of Mary. Yvonne is in demand all over the UK and internationally and sings a huge variety of roles from Wagner to G&S and everything in between. One of the most unusual and exciting times of her work, was playing the rôle of Marilyn Klinghoffer in the Chanel 4 Film version of John Adams’ opera The Death of Klinghoffer. In addition to a busy schedule in opera and concerts, Yvonne is also a professor of singing at her alma mater, the RNCM. Saffron Walden is doubly fortunate that Yvonne even lives locally.

FIRST NIGHT REVIEW
This gimmick-free Wagner won me over
Wagner has become the Saffron Opera Group’s special thing — so for its tenth anniversary, they gave us a passionate performance of his midsummer comedy. (Geoff Brown - September 16 2024)

Ten years ago, the Saffron Opera Group burst into life with an enthusiastic, semi-professional concert performance of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the newly-built Saffron Hall, part of the campus of Saffron Walden County High School. So how did they mark the tenth anniversary?

Revisiting Die Meistersinger, of course. Over the years, under their conductor Michael Thorne, Wagner has become the SOG’s special thing, and you only had to experience the power of the opera’s overture, blasting us straight in the face, to feel the group’s commitment and passion.

As the four and a half hours rolled on (that’s minus the intervals), it was also a pleasure to hear the music without worrying about opera directors who might shift the locale from 16th-century Nuremberg to a 1970s Eurovision Song Contest or even the dark side of the moon. Every singer carried a score or an iPad, but that never stopped the excellent William Dazeley (Beckmesser, the singing guild’s malicious pedant) using every inch of his long, thin body to bring his comically hissable character to life. Using multiple changes of clothing and a small but pertinent collection of props, Elaine McKrill’s concert staging played its part by lightly setting the scene: so much better than an overly clever opera designer whacking us over the head.

No other performer came close to Dazeley for acting panache, though in several cases there was a good reason why. With Paul Carey Jones knocked out by illness, the pivotal role of Hans Sachs, cobbler and wise old bird, was shared between two other cast members, William Stevens and Andrew Greenan, both tethered tightly to their scores.

The performance’s special glory was its communal togetherness and vim in the sections when Wagner goes full tilt. But nimble contributions elsewhere made the shortcomings less significant. Georgia Mae Bishop’s Magdalene (the heroine Eva’s companion) was especially lively, while Eleanor Dennis (Eva herself) hit all the notes with aplomb. Alex Aldren’s David (the cobbler’s apprentice) was always likeable. As for Walther, Eva’s beloved, Charne Rochford’s rather narrow timbre sometimes got lost among the orchestra’s fortissimos, but he certainly stood out singing the Nuremberg song contest’s winning entry, dressed for an evening at Glyndebourne.

The performance’s special glory was its communal togetherness and vim in the sections when Wagner goes full tilt, triggering vigorous singing from the full-throated amateur chorus, the perfect complement to the orchestra’s fire. The Saffron Opera Group is well set up for at least the next ten years.
