Saddleworth FC Press Release 20th March 2026
On 17th March 2026, the Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council (OMBC) Charitable Trust
Committee (CTC) approved in principle for Saddleworth FC (SFC) to take a lease of the
disused football pitch at Bishop Park, Grains Bar, Oldham for a term of 30 years.
There is a shortfall of available pitches in the Saddleworth and Oldham areas, and the
demand for junior football continues to increase. The Football Association’s Future Fit
initiative will also mean that teams playing under 13s at 9-a-side (previously 11-a-side) may
need a “home” venue in the future.
Pitches that are adaptable to both 11-a-side and 9-a-side are limited in availability.
Therefore, SFC have been considering options to develop and maintain a pitch to meet
both future demand and requirements for several months.
There are two pitches marked out at Bishop Park, both of which have not been in use for
several years, at least before the Covid-19 pandemic. Bishop Park is land donated by a
local family to the people of Oldham and developed just under 100 years ago. Therefore,
despite the challenge SFC faces in upgrading the area, we feel a duty to do so, to honour
the original benefactors’ intentions of use within this unique setting.
We are under no illusions as to the size of this challenge and are not currently setting a date
when the pitches will be back in use. They are in extremely poor condition and the wildlife
(which we will take steps to be sympathetic towards) has reclaimed the land. However we
are grateful for the positive messages of support and offers to help, which has given us
further impetus to ultimately see football being played there again.
We are continuing to consider funding options and our analysis on the correct approach to
upgrading. We are also working with the Football Association and contacting local
businesses and residents associations to ensure they feel heard and involved.
We are grateful to Alison Evans, Corporate Estates Manager OMBC, the CTC, and
Councillors Sam Al-Hamdani, Joshua Charters and Ken Rustidge (CTC Chair) for their
support and input to date.
