How would it feel to you to get a good nights sleep and for your child to have a full and peaceful nights sleep??

Many parents feel that this is just a dream and not something their child will ever do or at least not until they're older. And this is how Kate felt when we first spoke, her 6 month old baby was waking up 3-4 times per night and the whole family were running on a few hours of broken sleep a night. This was not sustainable for them and they reached out to me for support. We worked together to put the right sleep plan in place for their son and one which was suited for the whole family. And as you can read from the review below, after some hard work and lot's of consistency the whole family are now enjoying a FULL nights sleep.

This CAN happen for you too!!

If you are struggling with your little one's sleep or just want to have a chat about how we can make improvements for you and your child then I offer a free 30 minute introductory call, so get on touch today to book.

"We got in touch with Rachel, after a rough few months, when our second child was 6 months old and we are so glad we did! She spent a long time listening to our set up and the issues we were having and came up with a sleep plan that would fit really well with our family. She came up with solutions and gave me the confidence to implement these new things and I can honestly say that after one night he miraculously went from waking 3-4 times to sleeping through. For us, having the support emails after made a big difference as we were able to clarify what to do as different situations arose. It also meant that she was able to help with early risings and getting him into a much better nap routine (which was completely non-existent despite my best efforts!). Although I am reluctant to say this in case we jinx ourselves, at seven months old our son now regularly sleeps through the night and has two good naps a day. So not only am I getting more sleep, he is so much happier and contented too!"

I often get asked how much sleep does my baby need . . so I thought this would be helpful to cover. Following on from my post around daytime sleep, this is a guide to how much overall sleep your little one will need in these early months and how you can balance sleep between day and night for them in order to keep them well rested.

🌟Total sleep each day: 16 hours
🌟Night time sleep: 8-10 hours
🌟Daytime sleep: Varies
🌟Number of naps: 3-4 naps
🌟Wakeful windows: 45 - 120 minutes.

It's always worth remembering that these are all average sleep needs and some babies will need slightly less sleep and some slightly more. As long as your baby seems to be well rested, is happy and content, engaging and interacting well then it's likely they are getting enough sleep.
A newborn baby's sleep is disorganised and you will usually see more of a predictable pattern emerge between 4- 6 months, this is when a baby will sleep for longer chunks of time at night and naps take shape a little more during the day rather than the more spontaneous sleep which happens in those first few months.

I will be sharing sleep needs for older babies and children too in the coming weeks so keep an eye out for these.

How much daytime sleep does your child need?

Naps are always a hot topic when it comes to sleep. As I am sure a lot of you know already, daytime sleep is an essential part of a baby and toddlers sleep and how well they sleep during the day will have a big impact on how well they sleep during the night.

Overtiredness is one of the main causes for a LOT of sleep challenges - bedtime battles, night waking's, split nights and early rising. And overtiredness is very often caused by a lack of daytime sleep or long wakeful windows during the day.

😴⏰How much sleep does your little one need during the day? (these are of course all averages)
✨0-5 months: Varies
✨6-8 months: 3.5 hours
✨9-11 months: 3 hours
✨12-24 months: 2.5 hours
✨2 years: 1.5-2 hours
✨3 years: 30-90 minutes

I will be sharing more nap posts soon so keep an eye out for these if you are after some handy tips.

Some lovely feedback from a lovely family I had the pleasure of working with recently.
It was not a quick fix for this little one and it meant I had to really take my time to get to know more about this little boy and his personality in order to find the right steps to make those all important improvements to his sleep.
And this is what it's all about when I work with a family 1:1, every child is so different which is exactly why I offer my personalised service to find the right solution to better sleep for each individual child 💜

"Prior to working with Rachel, we co-slept with our 9 month old son as he would cry whenever he was in his Snuzpod and was waking and feeding almost every hour throughout the night. He also used a dummy and muslin to settle for his naps and night-time sleep. We were so sleep deprived and the night-wakings were disturbing our 2 year old daughter.

With Rachel’s help we have managed to transition our son into his own sleeping space in his own room. He now falls asleep happily on his own, without a dummy or muslin, and sleeps through the night with very few (if any) wake ups. If he does wake up, he quickly self settles without needing our help, and without waking his sister up.

Rachel is very attentive to messages and really listens in order to provide effective advice. We never felt rushed during telephone calls or like we were asking too many questions. I messaged Rachel during a wobbly moment I had while trying to re-settle our son for his nap and received a reassuring response within minutes! Rachel's support has enabled us to stay on track with our son's sleep plan. We now have the evenings to ourselves to unwind and relax together, prepare for the next day, go to bed at a normal time and actually sleep at night again! We are so very grateful to Rachel for her support and highly recommend her. Thank you, Rachel!"

Spring forward clock change ☀️🌼

Spring is certainly here this week which feels great! What comes alongside this is the spring clock change which is happening this weekend. The spring forward is often the easiest of the two clock changes, unlike in the autumn which can often bring an earlier morning wake up, we may actually get a bit of a lay in for a few days at least! Below are some suggestions of how you can best manage the clock change for you and your little one.

🌼 Take it slow - This can work best for babies and children who are very sensitive to changes in routine and who have a set bedtime each night. Start on the Wednesday before the clock change and bring bedtime forward by 15 minutes every night for 4 nights, so if your little one usually goes to bed at 7pm then on Wednesday go with 6:45pm then so on until Saturday they sit on 6pm which means Sunday they will sit back on their normal 7pm bedtime due to the clock shift. You can also adjust nap times and meal times accordingly with this method in the run up to the Saturday night.

🌼 Split the difference - On the Saturday and the night of the clock change bring bedtime earlier by 30 minutes and then on the Sunday it will actually sit back on the normal 7pm bedtime due to the clock shift. This is a good approach for little ones who can be a little more sensitive to change.

🌼 Do nothing - Go with the clock change and so on the Sunday just move your little ones whole routine to the new time. If you have an earlier riser this could be the solution that you have been looking for.

Whichever method you decide to use just remember to adjust both their nap times and their mealtimes/feeding times to meet the new routine. It can also be helpful to set their new wake up time which will help their body clocks adjust more easily.

Ensure you have a nice consistent evening routine in place, particularly now we are going to be seeing brighter evenings, the bedtime routine process will be really beneficial in settling your child more easily. And ensure that the routine is happening in a darker environment, so pull the curtains or the blackout blinds down in their bedrooms, melatonin is the hormone produced which helps our children (and us) to fall asleep easily and to sleep well at night time and this is created in darker environments particularly in the summer months.

Whichever method you decide to use just keep in mind It can take up to a week to adjust but their daily routine will help their body clocks to sit comfortably in the new routine soon ☀️🌼
