Island Speedway Season kicks off with a double dose of thrills

The 2024 Wightlink Warriors NORA Speedway season will start this Thursday 27th June at Smallbrook Stadium when the sport returns for its 8th season under the stewardship of Martin Widman and Barry Bishop on the Isle of Wight. This season sees at least 10 meetings (June to October) held at the 385m track including team racing, individual meetings, Island Masters 500, GT140 and Flat Track racing.

Thursday’s meeting is when IOW Speedway remembers long time club stalwart, the late Vince Mapley, in the first leg of the Vince Mapley Memorial meeting – an annual event. And it’s sure to be a thriller against one of the club’s biggest foes, the Cradley ARH Heathens. The West Midlanders have listed a strong side captained by Tom Spencer, with Aussie Matt Marson in the number one race jacket and Island-resident and huge Smallbrook favourite, the ex-Warrior making a surprise racing comeback, Danno Verge.

The new look 2024 Wightlink Warriors are led by reigning Island Masters champion Arran Butcher and have a combination of local Smallbrook-nurtured talent in Chad Wirtzfeld & Morgan Williams and a cosmopolitan flavour with a debut for German rider, Henning Loof, Steve Piper’s charges will need to be at their very best to get any kind of lead against the ARH Heathens who will be looking to win over this two legged scrap.

Promoter Barry Bishop articulates the enthusiasm all at Isle Of Wight Speedway have for the new season,
“It’s great to be back! We’ve been working hard in the off-season to maintain the stadium while maximising the usage of the track for our famed 'My First Skid' Speedway school and with the Winter Series. These have allowed others to experience riding our unique circuit as well as in our team's case, dialling their bikes in ready for the NORA season. Now it’s time to get the Warriors back on track!”

It’s very much a double header on Thursday with the other event on the race menu being the inaugural British J.A.P. Championship. Rained off from last year, this is actually the 2023 event (with places up for grabs to qualify for the ‘24 event being staged later this season) as well as the main business of taking the national crown on these iconic bikes. The 500cc J.A.P. is the most famous machine in Speedway history and riders mounted on the London-built bike finished on top of the World Championship rostrum from 1936 all the way to 1963.
With eight immaculately restored J.A.P. bikes ridden by some of the top veteran riders this will be some spectacle.

Event organiser Dave Johnson commented,
“I was watching some riders a couple of years ago racing their old J.A.P. machines in a Veterans event and they made the most fantastic noise and smell which brought the memories flooding back of the Golden Age of the sport. It got me thinking what a great meeting it would be if we could put on a show with J.A.P. Speedway bikes. I approached Barry Bishop about the idea and here we are two years later. I’m certain that planting this seed we can grow this into something very big.”

The line up of riders are:
Wightlink Warriors.
1. Arran Butcher (c), 2. Sonny Springer, 3. Chad Wirtzfeld, 4. Henning Loof, 5. Jacob Clouting, 6. Morgan Williams
Cradley ARH Heathens.

IOW speedway Winter Warmer 2 report 20.1.24

HEAT TURNED UP ON A COLD DAY

It may have been a bitterly cold day, but there was plenty of track action to warm the cockles at the Smallbrook stadium on Saturday as the Warriors speedway club staged their second Winter Warmer.

With no less that 44 heats of various motorcycle racing events, it was time to blow away those Christmas cobwebs and New Year hangovers.

The day started with 10 heats of youth racing on smaller machines with Charlie Southwick winning four of his five heats in style and only a fall in his first race prevented him going through the card unbeaten., his pass of the fast improving Jack Scully-Syer in their second heat looking spectacular and daring.

It was then the turn of the GT140s to show their stuff, With 8 qualifying heats leading to an A and B final, Wayne Broadhurst and Ian Clark leading the way, but with 8 rider races they didn’t have things all their own way with Steve Newsham and Keith Gwillan amongst others pushing them hard as they weaved their way through the field.

The final was won by Broadhurst after a great tussle with Clark who was caught up in traffic early in the final, Gwillan snatching 3rd by a whisker from Max Broadhurst.

In the flat track event, It was Chris Pugh who came out on top winning the 8 lap final comfortably from Brad Hardman. Once again plenty of passing to keep the fans ccupied.

In the 4 valve Upright speedway it was Dave Hammond who went to the final unbeaten and he made no mistake in that either with Andy Hickman picking up second place on the line from John Freeman.

The two vale speedway saw Martyn Stacy with through to the final with only a tumble on bend 4 in the 3rd heat when trying a spectacular outside pass stopping him from being unbeaten.

Stacy made no mistake in the final beating Giles Dismore with Rob Snow taking third.

In the senior 500cc Speedway event, it was Chad Wirtzfeld who has recently signed for the famous Belle Vue Manchester team, who went through the card with Eli Meadows taking 2nd from James Sealey, home favourite Morgan Williams falling with making an early challenge having his hopes dashed.

All in all, it may have been cold, but Promoter Barry Bishop was more than happy with the days work and the effort put in by everyone from the Competitors and the many track staff and volunteers.

It’s time to share to your friends and contact and Isle of Wight notification pages. We are just one sleep away from Saturday’s Winter Warmer 2.

Entry is just £5 and children always free. The action will start at 11am with youth racing. Gates open at 10am. Come and enjoy lots of on track action in a lovely clean stadium, with great food and drinks.

Here is your official PR…

Following the success of the Warriors pre-Christmas track meeting, the club are running a second ‘Winter Warmer’ this Saturday at Smallbrook Stadium starting at 11.00 am.

With 50 riders expected and almost 50 races programmed, speedway, flat-track and grasstrack are fully represented as the racers take advantage of some early competitive training ahead of the 2024 track season.

Wightlink Warriors co-owner Barry Bishop was clearly looking forward to his club hosting the event as he said,

“We all thoroughly enjoyed our first training meeting, and the quality of the racing was excellent. The feedback from everyone involved was that even in the drizzle it was a fabulous event and similar action would be very welcome and so in addition to the returning classes we have taken the opportunity to include some speedway action on the older two valve and four valve machines.

I know all the varied classes will keep everyone entertained and for just £5.00 for adults it represents outstanding value for money. Youngsters 16 and under will, as usual, be free and we have all our usual refreshment outlets operational. It’s looking like another bumper bundle of excitement, and I can’t wait to see what unfolds”.
