Back up to Dougie Hamilton wee hill for our second event of the year hosted by the Mayhem winch challenge. What an event it was.! 😀

The build up to the event had been really hectic. Finding more and more things on the truck during the prep that needed to be sorted. 🤦🏼‍♂️ Only got it finished so that I was happy with it on the Friday morning and left at 1pm. Meaning that I was pretty knackered and felt unprepared heading up on Friday, which is very unlike us. I asked Luke Wakelen to drive hope for a few hours sleep but that didn’t happen. 😴

We arrived later than planned, shoved the truck in the tent and straight to the pub for dinner. 🍔🍺 Many thanks to Jamie Dickie and James Halliday for paying. Much appreciated. Austin James joined us later on and we crashed out early at the BnB.

Saturday, sign on, sorted the storage boxes with spares on the truck and up to the top of the hill for the start. Dougie set us off about 9am in glorious sunshine. ☀️ The truck was going well and we knocked out a few stages pretty quick. However, kept dying after being on heavy power, and was being a pain to start, but managed it. Then once in the new wood and in the bogs it kept happening. The fuel pump was red hot so thought it was best after 4 stages to change it and save being stuck in a section, dead. 30mins later back out with a fresh pump but the same issue was still there. Still not sure what it is. Lunch was at 12-2 and in our last section before we planned to stop we broke a front prop. I ran back to the pits to get it changed for the spare but the spare I thought was right wasn’t. So we dragged it out and went for lunch in 2wd and sorted it during the break to minimise the time lost. Thanks George for the use of your van and grinder and William Burnett and Jamie for giving us a hand to get it on. We had to chop it down but made it work.

The afternoon was mint and truck was flying. It felt great and really got in a rhythm. Another 4 stages and finished at 4:30. Austin had been busy in the pits while we were out and fixed the original prop with another joint. So we but that one back on thinking it would be better than running the cut one, and headed to the night lap. 🌙

It went a bit wrong on the night lap. A bit too eager to do well, I landed on power over the tyres and blew the front prop again. Gutted but it was worth 20 points and no time limit. So Gwyn Lewis took us back to the pits for tools and we took the remainder of the prop off and finished the lap in 2wd. Which I had to take full advantage of, doing about 10 laps of the Ken block pole in full Tokyo drift mode. That made it worth it. Last place but still got the lap. ⏱️

Sunday, we got the prop fixed again with a new joint and cable tied the spare to the back. 9am start again we dived straight in and got on it. The sections were brilliant. Really long and technical. There wasn’t much that was drivable. Luke has his work cut out, and some bits we both thought how the hell we going to do that but we smashed out 6 sections, stopping for lunch dead on 11:57 exiting the last section right at mothers tea. ☕️ 12:30 we were back out and wanted another 4 sections. That was the goal. It was really hot in the trees and poor Luke was working hard. Nothing on that hill is flat. All big rocks and vertical. He was totally knackered and dripping wet but we did it finishing 4 sections with 15mins to spare. I said “can we do a few scatter punches” but he replied “no I’m done”. I don’t blame him. He collapsed on the floor drinking as much as he could before going for a quick swim. 🥵

The truck was mega all weekend except the prop issues. Huge thank you to Marcus Williams for all the help getting the gearbox sorted. The loan of a laptop and a few spares for the weekend. It was faultless all weekend running on the HTG and very excited to see what else we can do with it. So much potential and it was a pleasure to use. 🙏🏻

We worked really hard and got 10 sections done both days resulting in 20 out of 24 over the weekend. We finished 2nd just 9 points behind Seamus Doyle which you can’t complain about. Him and Gar Twomey have way more knowledge and experience than us, with a completely new untested gearbox setup, only Luke’s 5th event as a co driver and a few small issues. Very happy to finish runner up.🥈

Thank you so much to Dougie and all his crew for all their hard work putting on a great event. Thank you to all our sponsors and great companies that help us put together this amazing truck. Well done Luke for getting us round and not 1 roll all weekend, plus getting us there. Thank you Edd Seymour and Austin for the help in the pits, and I can’t wait to see all the videos from Sunday chasing us round like a lunatic. Thank you Gwyn, Katie and Carys for a few lifts and spare joints. So many other people but you were all great and couldn’t have done it without you.

Looking forward to the stampede next after a quick stop at Poland. 🇵🇱 😆

Setting off for the Mayhem winch challenge. be like,

Transbrake engage, build boost, launch it…… 🐌💨

All done and ready to go finally. Been a long few weeks and some serious late nights again to get it ready. But we are on route. Suns out, tunes are up cruising to Scotland. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ☀️🎵

There will be another post next week with all the prep we have done to make it to the event, but not now. Too tired and looking forward to the weekend.!

Another little job done and ticked off.! ✅

The replacement Htg screen arrived for the one sausage fingers put his thumb through. Neatly in the dash looking like a gauge in a 3D printed holder we have designed and made. Cannibalising an old gauge to steal the glass lense out off, so that should keep it clean and safe.

This will help us keep track of the gears and also temperature. 🌡️

More things to try out, test and get use to on Sunday. 👍🏼

A quick video from testing on Sunday.!

Out of the box the 8hp goes well with minimal setup. Very pleased with it so far. Still a lot to do, to get it working spot on. We now know what we want to change, what we need to work on from what we learned. 🤓

Already it’s night and day different to the old 4hp-22. The quickness and smoothness between drive and reverse is fantastic and going to make it much easier manoeuvring in sections. You can’t miss them either which you could with the old shifter. It is very nice to use.

At the moment we are driving it in manual mode and went for a 2-3-4 shift to see what happened. Although I didn’t make it up the hill it’s really good clip to show how quick the gear changes are and they can be taken foot flat to the floor on power. I’m pretty sure that the old box wouldn’t have done that and if you were to try, it wouldn’t have taken the abuse. 💪🏻

More testing on Sunday. 😀

It won’t be long and we will be there. Another week of testing and then a bit more prep.Cannot wait.! 😀

Here we are sports fans. We got there. 99% finished.!

Going out testing the new 8 speed tomorrow. Very excited to abuse it after a few more weeks of hard work and late nights. It’s been a massive project and all we have worked on for the last 6 months to get it done, so very relieved for it to be loaded on the trailer ready.

Since the expo show the box had to come back out. Had to investigate an oil leak, which is now sorted and a few other jobs while it was out. Then it went back in with the anodised adapters and then we could finish the whole conversion.

The HTG gcu has now been mounted in the dash properly with its cover to keep it clean. We put a park release cable in as it needs to be running to get it into drive, otherwise the gearbox is locked up. So this was a must for me, if you’re stuck in a section and dead you can’t use the winches to get out. The d2 hi low gaiter got modified with an Ali plate inside instead of the original plastic clip so it could be fixed down properly. Little details to just get it finished off right.

We have 3d printed a gauge holder for the HTG dial indicator. Really happy how this came out. So that will tell us what gear we are in and gearbox temp. Well it would, until sausage fingers stuck his finger through the screen and broke it. So I’ve had to order another. 🤦🏼‍♂️

As well as all the gearbox stuff, it has had a new belly plate and axle skid plate after 2 years of abuse they were pretty knackered. And the cherry on top is a new 3inch stainless exhaust. It has been on the to do list for a while and then definitely needed sorting after it fell off at dougies. It was the only thing that we feel let the truck down after all the other nice bits we have put on it.

Left to do is re joint all the arms but for now they will do and to get Marcus and Jose on it to get it setup, then we are race ready. 🐌💨

Cross fingers for tomorrow…. 🤞🏼

If you know us then you know that those 8hp adapters weren’t going to stay bare Ali for long.!

Just back from anodise with some other bits so that it all matches the winches, coilovers and wheels. Get it tidied up and make it show pony spec again.

Best hurry up and get it all back in for some testing…

As a few people already know, and have for a while, and the rest of you will have seen at the 4x4 Expo show today, we have been up to no good again. Prepare yourself for a long read if you’re interested. It’s a big project.! ☕️

After we broke our gearbox at the The Welsh one50 last year, what could be done to upgrade it and make it better? Now that we are driving the truck harder it feels like it is at its limit. The seed was planted that we should put an 8hp in it. The benefits, usability and smoothness of it is very appealing. But after some initial research and speaking to a few people it seemed out of reach. Very expensive and not really proven in the racing that we do. Only 2-3 people running it behind a td5, in road cars. The truck has been doing well as it was so we left it. But the idea never went away. 🤔

A few months later it’s October and constantly thinking how good it could be and seeing other people having problems with their 4hp-22, we really got some motivation for it. Someone had to bit the bullet and make it happen. Always interested in making cool stuff, trying new ideas I wasn’t going to be happy until I had done it. With Marcus Williams and José Amorim onboard and all for it we made a plan. 📈✏️

The biggest problem with this setup that put us off straight away when first looking into the possibility, was length. With the existing adapters using the BMWs gearbox it is much longer than an r380 setup or 300tdi auto. And even worst for us as we have a v8 gearbox with is 50mm shorter than an r380. So we needed to lose nearly 100mm to get it in. This was critical because the props are both the same length and the front prop on full droop is close to the belly. There was no way we were cutting the belly/ frame about and no way were we going to run a centre bearing. So we had to make it the same.

It’s been a long few months, so many headaches and problems that had to be solved but we did it. Lots of designing, machining and fabrication to make our own front and rear adapters, rear output shaft, gearbox mounts and other custom parts to make it work. However still using many standard parts, so spares are easy to source and keeps a lot of it the same. We are using discovery 4 8hp-70 which has made it all doable. The bell housing is much bigger with a bigger torque converter than the BMWs gearboxes and as it was designed for a transfer box originally, there are much better mounting options at the rear than the 2 wheel drive BMWs ones. We feel this is the best option to go for to retain the standard lt230 and make it a viable solution to just bolt straight in, without the additional cost and implications of changing transfer boxes or anything else. We have managed to make it the same length as an r380 by maximising everything we could. It not possible to make it any shorter and have grabbed every millimetre we can. It has still ended up longer than we wanted it in our case, but with a longer front output fl**ge it all works and fits as we wanted. After a very quick first drive before the show, already the shifter is so much nicer to use. Mission complete. ✅

Massive thanks to Mwmachines 4x4 who we have worked closely with from the start. Without him this definitely wouldn’t have happened. The support and help to get the standalone HTG system wired up, running and working. We will now continue to develop the setup with him, along side Td5 Inside / Performance Inside to see what it can do. 🙏🏻👨🏼‍💻

Massive thanks to Blackbird Industries James Ayre and Michael Brownie Brown obviously for the continued support as always. Your time, use of the workshop for whatever idea I come up with next. Help designing the front adapter and putting up with my endless annoying requests to make it how I want it. 👍🏼

We cannot wait to get out now very soon for some testing and see if it’s all worth it. 🐌💨
