The poles aren’t actually the exercise. 👀

Or at least, getting over them isn’t the whole exercise.

It’s really easy to put poles on the ground and suddenly make the session about whether your horse clears them without touching anything.

Tap a pole = bad.
Clear them = good.

But that’s missing an awful lot of what pole work can actually tell you.

Instead, pay attention to:

→ Rhythm — does it stay consistent before, over and after the poles?
→ Balance — does your horse stay balanced or change as they approach?
→ Activity — are they genuinely moving forwards or shuffling towards them?
→ Your position — do you stay central or suddenly look down and tip forwards?
→ The other side — what has actually changed after the poles?

And remember: poles on the floor aren’t fences.

You don’t automatically need to change into a jumping position just because they’re there.

Ideally, I want the horse and rider to approach in a balanced, active rhythm, maintain that through the poles and come out the other side without everything changing.

The poles are there to help the exercise.

They’re not the only measure of whether it was successful.

So next time you set some out, try listening to the footfalls rather than watching the poles.

Can you keep the same rhythm before, during and after?

Better Rides — Episode 3 🤍

Your dream horse might not be the right horse for you. 🐴

Before you start looking at adverts, forget about the horse for a moment and think about you.

Ask yourself:

→ What can I confidently ride now?
→ What do I actually want to do?
→ How much time do I have?
→ Where will my horse live?
→ What facilities do I have access to?
→ What support do I have around me?
→ What can I realistically afford to buy and keep?
→ Am I buying for the rider I am now, or the rider I hope to become?

A talented, beautiful horse with huge potential might sound like a dream on paper.

That doesn’t automatically make them your dream horse.

So before you start scrolling, ask yourself one final question:

Does the horse I’m looking for actually fit the life I can give them?

Episode 2 of Buying Better

Save this and come back to these questions before you start looking.

Hello!

Better Rides July is officially over!

And because quite a lot of you are new here, I thought I should probably actually introduce myself.

I’m Tiri. I’m an accredited coach, I ride, I’m a groom, and I’m also a trainee dressage judge.

I started Better Rides because I wanted to share simple, practical things that can actually make a difference to you and your horse — without overcomplicating everything.
And that’s definitely not stopping just because July has finished.!

Over the next few months there’ll be more Better Rides, more coaching and training content, and I’m also working on something new around one of the biggest decisions we make as riders — buying the right horse.

So if you’ve joined us during July, thank you for being here. There’s lots more coming!
