We need your help.

A planning application has been submitted for the construction of a large anaerobic digestion plant just 200 metres from our swimming school. This industrial facility would process food and farm waste, releasing odours, gases like methane and ammonia, and fine particles into the air — all of which can seriously impact the health and wellbeing of the 700+ children who attend lessons here every week.

At Aweswim, your children’s safety and experience have always been our top priority. But if this plant goes ahead:

The air quality around our pool could be permanently affected, putting young lungs at risk.

Strong smells will make it unpleasant for families to wait, watch, or enjoy refreshments in our new viewing area.

The increase in vermin, flies, noise, and traffic from HGVs will harm the welcoming, peaceful environment we’ve worked so hard to create.

And most worryingly, the future of Aweswim itself is at stake. This could force us to close — taking with it 15 local jobs and vital swimming lessons when waiting lists are already at an all-time high.

This development doesn’t just impact us — it affects the wider community too:

The area is already prone to flooding and classed as water-stressed. A waste plant here is irresponsible.

There are no public transport links to the site — all traffic will be on an already dangerous stretch of the A505.

The proposal is on Green Belt farmland – this kind of industrial site simply doesn’t belong in our countryside.

We’re doing everything we can to oppose this — but we can’t do it alone.

Aweswim Swimming School

Aweswim offers swimming courses for people of all ages and abilities, ranging from parent and baby groups through to adults.

Aweswim has two swim schools. One based in Hertfordshire covering Watford, Kings Langley, St Albans and the surrounding areas and one based in North Hertfordshire covering Royston, Cambridge and the surrounding areas.

The Cambridge school operates from a privately owned pool facility. The pool is heated to above 30 degrees providing gentle comfortable bathing for all, especially the young. We have a lounge area, where parents not involved in classes can relax. We also have an area for younger siblings to play under supervision of their parents.

In order to provide the highest quality of teaching possible, classes have a maximum of six pupils. Having such small lessons means that the pupils' progress can be monitored and they are ensured to have personal guidance.

Aweswim is not only for children! We also run baby and adult classes so that people of all ages can join. It is important to learn how to swim to not only reduce the risk of drowning but it is vital for all water based activities.

Have a lesson on Sunday 29th December at our Royston Pool

We have an outside company looking for children from 4yrs of any ability to attend a lesson which would be taken by a supervised trainee teacher.

The cost for this would be £5 per child per hour. Times would be from 3pm-6pm.

Sessions are £18 for 30 mins for 4 people, £22.50 for 5 people (of all ages) and £27 for 6 people. For an hour it is £36 for 4, £45 for 5 and £54 for 6. Please note, it is a maximum of 6 people, including spectators. For an hour, 2 forms will need to be completed. Excluding changing time, you would have the facility to yourselves.
