2021– 2026 at Newsells Park Stud | Building on our legacy

In 2021, Newsells Park Stud entered its latest chapter when tech-entrepreneur Graham Smith-Bernal and his wife Marcela acquired the Stud and its bloodstock. Having been long-standing clients of Newsells Park, their ambition was to build on the remarkable legacy established by its previous owners.

Today, new partnerships and ownership opportunities have welcomed more people to Newsells Park Stud and the world of thoroughbred breeding and racing, while the planting of a 25-acre vineyard has created Newsells Park Winery, producing premium English sparkling wines and adding a unique new dimension to the estate.

Recent graduates raised at Newsells Park include G1/G2 winners THUNDERING ON, YLANG YLANG, PEARLED MAJESTY, RAHIEBB, HEREDIA, LAKE FOREST, ALOA and DATO. While the stallion roster is headed by NATHANIEL, alongside WITHOUT PAROLE, A’ALI & ISAAC SHELBY.

As Newsells Park celebrates its centenary, the commitment remains unchanged: to raise exceptional thoroughbreds and continue building a legacy that began in 1926.

2000-2021 at Newsells Park Stud | A new era begins

In 2000, Newsells Park Stud entered a transformative new chapter when it was acquired by Jacobs Holding AG under the leadership of the late Klaus J. Jacobs, this included expanding the estate to 1,200 acres.

A successful entrepreneur, philanthropist and passionate horseman, Klaus Jacobs had a clear vision: to create one of Europe’s leading commercial thoroughbred nurseries without compromising the highest standards of horsemanship and equine care.

A significant programme of investment followed. 70,000 trees were planted, new facilities developed inc: American-style barns with a house by each for the barn managers, horse walkers (including 20m and 20m x 30m walkers), lunge rings, many post and rail paddocks, etc.

A huge investment in mares also took place and the results soon followed. The first horse ever purchased was WALDMARK as a weanling in 2000, who is the dam of Classic winner MASKED MARVEL, plus WALDLERCHE, dam of 4-time Gr.1 winner WALDGEIST. During this era, Newsells Park also bred Classic winner LEGATISSIMO and Gr.1 winners - JAPAN, MOGUL, LIGHTNING SPEAR, GITANO HERNANDO, RITE OF PASSAGE, etc.

In addition, stallions stood at the Stud again including MOUNT NELSON, NATHANIEL and EQUIANO.

1970s–2000 at Newsells Park Stud | A period of change

Following the death of Sir Humphrey de Trafford in 1971, Newsells Park Stud changed hands several timesbefore being purchased by Issam Fares in the mid-1980s. During this period of transition, the Stud’s most notable success was ROARING RIVA, winner of the G1 Phoenix Park Stakes 📷

A successful international businessman and thoroughbred owner and breeder, Issam Fares had established a respected breeding operation in Kentucky, notably breeding two-time American Horse of the Year CURLIN.

During his ownership of Newsells Park Stud the land comprised 650 acres (now known as the ‘East side’), and the stallion EMPEROR JONES stood at the Stud from 1996 to 2000, sire of their home-bred JANET, a dual US Gr.1 winner.

All his bloodstock interests were subsequently dispersed following his return to politics in Lebanon, and the Stud entered a new era in 2000 under Klaus J Jacobs.

1950s–1960s at Newsells Park Stud | Champions emerge

The 1950s proved particular successful for Sir Humphrey de Trafford with notable Classic-winning horses home-bred from his small band of mares inc:

🏆 PARTHIA – winner of the 1959 Epsom Derby. He also won the Gainesborough Stakes, White Rose Stakes, Dee Stakes, Jockey Club Stakes, Paradise Stakes, Lingfield Derby Trial.

🏆 ALCIDE – winner of the 1958 St Leger and 1959 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Alcide was in fact favourite for the 1958 Epsom Derby but was found ‘suspiciously’ with broken ribs on Newmarket Heath and could not run. He also won the Horris Hill Stakes, Lingfield Derby Trial, Great Voltigeur Stakes.

Both were trained by Captain (later Sir) Cecil Boyd-Rochfort at Freemason Lodge Stable in Newmarket.

Other notable home-bred winners during de Trafford’s era included: Portmarnock - 1937 National Stakes & Champagne Stakes, Papillio – 1953 Goodwood Stakes, Approval – 1969 Observer Gold Cup at Doncaster & 1970 Dante Stakes at York (trained by Henry Cecil and rated just 2lb below Nijinsky), etc.
