Royston Golf Club Royston Golf Club
The Oldest 18 Hole Golf Course in England. Dating back to 1869. As they say…. the rest is history.

Documents suggest that golf was first played at Royston in the seventeenth century after King James I (James VI of Scotland) selected Royston to build his hunting lodge. The king’s favourite, George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, is recorded as playing on Therfield Heath in 1624. Two centuries later, two Cambridge Undergraduates thought that the Therfield chalk hills would be an excellent locat

ion for a course that could be used by fellow students, making it possibly the oldest 18 hole golf course outside of Scotland. These two students were Andrew Murray ( later Lord Dunedin) and George Gosset, both very keen golfers who came over with a bag of clubs each, a hole cutter and set about arranging their golf course by establishing the holes by position and distance according to their striking of a golf ball. The course was well received and the club soon had 17 members, paying a 2/6 (2 shillings and 6 pence) annual subscription. However, the course unfortunately only lasted two years when in 1871 it was felt that 12 miles from Cambridge to Royston was too far. Our course that was then designed followed much of the original eighteen holes set out in 1869. This was the prelude to the establishment of Royston Golf Club on the 1st May 1892. Today, Royston Golf Club offers members and visitors a warm welcome at all times. The views from the course are spectacular and the course a challenge for all levels of golfer. Buggies and trolleys are available to hire from a well-stocked pro shop. To book tee times, members and visitors should use the BRS booking system. The club has a full fixture list that may be viewed on the Intelligent Golf App (IG). There are also many social days and evenings that the club organise which are well attended. Membership at Royston also provides:

Free membership to the 1892 club- reciprocal golf at 31 other courses. Smart Golfer Network – reciprocal golf at other 33 courses in the network. Free golf tag
Free wi-fi in the clubhouse
Members’ bar discounts

BOWEN CUP & DOROTHY JOHNSON TEAM TROPHY

Thursday 3rd September 2026

Presented by Mr G W H Bowen, Royston GC Captain in 1933, to be played for annually, one year at Saffron Walden and the following year at Royston. Apparently several players were members of both clubs and as a mark of friendship between the clubs this match was arranged.

Once again, 5th year running Royston ladies have played extremely well and retained both Trophies 👏 👏

It was all very close - Marjory Humphreys won The Bowen Cup with a nett 68 followed closely in 2nd place by Sue Bidwell with nett 69. 👏 👏 🏆

Photos show Chris Dewhurst, competitions Secretary and organiser presenting the Trophy to Marjory and Chris receiving the Dorothy Johnson Team Trophy from Saffron Walden. Thank you to both club’s players today, and Royston ladies will look forward to a return match next year at Saffron Walden.

Royston Golf Club hosted its first ever *Get Girls into Golf Event* this week.
Led by club pro Mike Clemmons and supported by volunteers from across the club, 20 girls participated across 5 golf stations for an introduction to the fundamentals of the game.
It’s a great time for girls and golf , and Royston Golf Club hopes to welcome more girls into their junior section through events such as these.
A big thank you to all those who supported the event, especially to our current junior members who took time out to meet and inspire the next generation of girls in golf!
A warm welcome awaits at the club.

SENIOR OPEN- 2026
Thanks to the rains of the day before, Royston golf course was in very good condition for the Senior Open which saw 96 players in teams of 3 competing. The weather stayed mainly sunny and dry apart from a sharp 5 minute shower in the early afternoon, although the breeze got progressively stronger as the day went on. The players represented 37 different clubs from as far afield as Wiltshire, Oxfordshire and Lancashire.

With the scoring format of best 2 stableford scores on each hole, apart from all counting on par3's, the day was won with an impressive score of 90.

The club president Alan Greenbank along with Roger Craigen, the organiser, awarded the prizes in the form of John Lewis vouchers, to the following:

1st place with 90 points team representing Waterstock GC in Oxfordshire, David Luther, Patrick Hingley and Steve Rogers.

2nd place with 86 points team representing Hainault Forest GC, Frederick Holmes, Roy Sammons and Keith Taylor.

3rd place with 83 points, on countback from 4 other teams, representing Bawburgh GC, Norfolk, Tim Sims, Phil Rank and Owen Williams.

Best front 9 with 42 points representing Chesfield Downs and Chalgrove Manor GCs John Harper, Simon Juniper and Steve Poulsen.

Best back9 with 49 points representing Ogbourne and Marlborough GCs in Wiltshire, Steve Sear, Neil Baker and Colin Smith.

Nearest pins on par3's were won by Frederick Holmes, Hainault Forest GC, Ian Hookway, Rochford Hundred GC, Paul Slaughter, Cambridge Country Club, and Michael Stainton, Bush Hill Park GC, on 12th and 16th.

Nearest the pin-in-2 on 18th saw 4 players taking full advantage on the strong backwind and eagling the hole! They were Paul Slaughter, Michael Stainton, Keith Taylor and Rob Burleigh, Haverhill GC. All received a prize after we scrambled around and found another 3 vouchers!

All competitors had a good day out and one email just received from a team playing the course for the first time sums up the day:

Thank you very much indeed for a great day yesterday at Royston Golf Club Seniors Open which my team and I very much enjoyed. Having never played your course before - it is certainly interesting and challenging!!!! The overall organisation of the day was brilliant, together with the delicious food served when we came in was superb - thank you to you and your team
