Royston Golf Club

Royston Golf Club Royston Golf Club
The Oldest 18 Hole Golf Course in England. Dating back to 1869. As they say…. the rest is history.

Documents suggest that golf was first played at Royston in the seventeenth century after King James I (James VI of Scotland) selected Royston to build his hunting lodge. The king’s favourite, George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, is recorded as playing on Therfield Heath in 1624. Two centuries later, two Cambridge Undergraduates thought that the Therfield chalk hills would be an excellent locat

ion for a course that could be used by fellow students, making it possibly the oldest 18 hole golf course outside of Scotland. These two students were Andrew Murray ( later Lord Dunedin) and George Gosset, both very keen golfers who came over with a bag of clubs each, a hole cutter and set about arranging their golf course by establishing the holes by position and distance according to their striking of a golf ball. The course was well received and the club soon had 17 members, paying a 2/6 (2 shillings and 6 pence) annual subscription. However, the course unfortunately only lasted two years when in 1871 it was felt that 12 miles from Cambridge to Royston was too far. Our course that was then designed followed much of the original eighteen holes set out in 1869. This was the prelude to the establishment of Royston Golf Club on the 1st May 1892. Today, Royston Golf Club offers members and visitors a warm welcome at all times. The views from the course are spectacular and the course a challenge for all levels of golfer. Buggies and trolleys are available to hire from a well-stocked pro shop. To book tee times, members and visitors should use the BRS booking system. The club has a full fixture list that may be viewed on the Intelligent Golf App (IG). There are also many social days and evenings that the club organise which are well attended. Membership at Royston also provides:

Free membership to the 1892 club- reciprocal golf at 31 other courses. Smart Golfer Network – reciprocal golf at other 33 courses in the network. Free golf tag
Free wi-fi in the clubhouse

Greens update…..
Greens team have been verti cutting which involves running vertical blades through the surface. This is another form of aeration which helps remove lateral growth and reduces the thatch layer.
It helps improve the ball roll and cleans the green without exposing the soil.co.uk

Vernon Putting Cup 2026
Great day at the club with a good number of entrants who were supported by family and friends, all having a drink on the patio.
Winner after tense rounds and playing a 36 hole final was Gary Hammond who defeated Peter Law with Gary’s last putt being a hole in one to seal the victory.
It was a great day and many matches were very close, and we even had 2 junior golfers giving their seniors a run for their money and will have a great future at the club.
A good day at the club.
