Boxgrove played their first game of the 2026 season on Sunday with a 'home' tie at Tangmere against Stansted Park Cricket Club. It was a great game played in good spirits in lovely weather conditions (certainly not too hot!).
After winning the toss, our skipper decided we should bat first. This was primarily due to the fact that we only had 9 players at the scheduled start time, with one other stuck on the M27!
Our innings didn't get off to a great start and we slipped to 37-4 off 11 overs, with the Stansted opening bowlers causing us a number of problems. Our opener (J. King) was holding steady at one end and we recovered to 106-7 after 25 overs, thanks to a brilliant knock of 32 from 12 year-old L. Newman.
Two Boxgrove records were broken towards the end of our innings. J. King broke the record for highest score by a player in his first game, finishing on 83* (the previous record being 79 set a couple of years ago). Then, on the last ball of our innings R. Wilcox finished on 47*. Despite falling just short of his maiden half-century, he beat his previous high of 15* and secured the highest score by a number 9 player for Boxgrove (beating the previous record of 46, also set against Stansted Park).
We had set the opposition 184 to win.
Some decent bowling from the Boxgrove opening bowlers failed to lead to the wickets it deserved, until the 4th over with one of our 6 debutants bowling a beauty to dismiss their opener.
Grove continued to show a lot of spirit in the field but the runs kept coming off the bat. A mix up between the batsman led to an easy run out and then an unplayable delivery from R. Wilcox dimissed the Stansted Park number 3 batsman just short of his half-century.
Sadly for Boxgrove it wasn't to be enough and Stansted Park won the game with a little over 5 overs to spare.
It was a good display from both sides, who only had 10 men each, and we were all glad to be back out on the pitch playing some cricket for Boxgrove and setting more club records in the process.
Roll on the next one.
Best of luck to Stansted Park Cricket Club for the rest of the season.
