THE Rotherham Charity Cup was handed over to its new ‘home’ today and will get pride of place in the Town Hall display cabinet near the Mayor’s Parlour.
The official handover took place in the Mayor’s Parlour when Charity Cup representatives, Chairman Les Payne, President Chris Eyre and Secretary Julie Carroll, presented it to the new Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Haroon Rashid - a former local footballer - and Council Leader Cllr Chris Read.
We needed somewhere for the Charity Cup to be housed when it was no longer able to be kept in storage at the Museum Archives and felt a prominent public building in the town would be the rightful place.
This was because the Charity Cup actually ‘belongs’ to the townspeople of Rotherham - it was purchased back in 1889 through public subscription after an appeal for funds to buy a trophy for a new football competition which would, itself, raise money for good causes.
We initially approached Cllr Read as Council Leader and he clearly agreed with our request and the reasoning behind it. We thank him for his support and help in facilitating this move into the Council’s headquarters.
It is rather a happy coincidence too that, 137 years on, its permanent new home at the Town Hall is just 100 yards (or length of a football pitch) up the road from where the Charity Cup was purchased in 1889… Mason’s Jewellers which was at the top of High Street.
The cup is one of the oldest grassroots football cups in England and it seems that only three others still being played for are older, one of those being the Sheffield Senior Cup.
A bonus for us is that the Charity Shield, established in 1890 and which goes to the runners-up in our final, is also to be housed alongside the Charity Cup in the same cabinet which means everyone who visits the Mayor’s Parlour either as a guest or on a tour, will pass by our trophies.
We are delighted that a prestige trophy will be in the town’s prestige building.
The amount raised from this season’s competition will be announced shortly but we certainly expect to top the £7,000 we donated last year.

THE Rotherham Charity Cup got a great boost to its funds today at the Rotherham Sunday League double cup final.
Thanks to the Sunday League invitation to run raffles at their two finals at the New York Stadium today, the Charity Cup benefited, in total, to the tune of £322.
Thanks to the spectators and everyone else who supported us today, it really is appreciated. And there were plenty of winners because we handed out 16 prizes in all. Thanks also to Assistant Referee Emma Booth and 4th official John Hancock for their generosity.
Premier Division champions Gate Inn won the Brian Beeley Sunday Cup, beating Division One Joker 8-0 whilst in the Malcolm Gabbitas Trophy, Ecclesfield Blues were 4-1 winners over Maltby Main Haynook. In total over 920 watched the two finals.
Once again we are indebted to all the local football followers who have supported our competition including at the Charity Cup Final last Tuesday.
We hope to announce, in the next few weeks, the amount we have raised this season and hopeful we can top last season’s donated figure of £7,500.
We can’t do it without your great support.

THE Rotherham Charity Cup gets great support from the Rotherham Sunday League so we hope they get great support on their big day at the New York Stadium on Sunday.
They have two cup finals and are expecting bumper crowds for both.
In the morning (10.30) in the Brian Beeley Cup Final, Premier Division champions the Gate Inn from Swinton will start hot favourites against Division One side New Joker who thus bring a famous name back to this final albeit in a different guise.
At 2.15 it’s the Malcolm Gabbitas Trophy Final in memory of the popular long-serving club, League and Charity Cup stalwart when Maltby Main Haynook of the Championship face Division One Ecclesfield Blues.
We thank the Sunday League for their generosity in inviting the Charity Cup to hold a raffle at each final. It is greatly appreciated.

REFEREES come in for criticism at times but the officials at the Rotherham Charity Cup Final on Tuesday deserve only the highest praise for their commitment and generosity.
Referee Dylan Hague and his Assistant Referees Shane Conlon and Ryan Dawson decided to act when there was potential for a colour clash with Brinsworth DC’s predominantly black kit.
Brinsworth’s shirt features a black back with black and white front and they usually wear black shorts and socks too. If the referee was in the usual all-black, then a clash was obvious.
So, Dylan and his assistants got their heads together and agreed to change shirt colour and so all three bought orange shirts to wear on the night. They then declined to accept the cost when a member of the Charity Cup offered to pay for the shirts.
It is a gesture by all three that showed great commitment and foresight as they prepared for their big day and it is greatly appreciated by all at the Charity Cup.
Brinsworth DC played their part as well.
Whilst, understandably, they wished to wear their usual, first choice shirt in their first appearance in our prestigious final, they offered to change to white shirts and white socks to differentiate from the black shirts and socks of the referee.
That gesture is appreciated too by the Charity Cup.
*A word of praise to officials and players of both teams, AFP Pewter Pot and Brinsworth DC for leaving their respective dressing rooms at the New York Stadium in an impeccable state after the game.
It shows respect for the Stadium and the competition and we have received thanks today from Rotherham United which we pass on to both clubs.

TWO quality goals from Harry Day were enough to ensure Brinsworth DC won the Rotherham Charity Cup for the first time.
Their 2-0 win over holders AFP Pewter Pot was secured despite playing the last 35 mins with 10 men after central defender Matt Crookes was sent off.
Day struck after just 8 minutes, a wonderfully crafted finish as he lifted his angled effort from 16 yards over Ben Brunt into the far side of the net.
On the half hour he was at it again - picking up a clearance before striking a superb effort, with pace, low into the net from 25 yards.
It should have been three immediately afterwards when Day got through, slipped aside to Harley Battinson but he somehow slid his shot wide of a gaping goal.
AFP found it difficult to extricate themselves from Brinsworth’s grip but it needed fine defending to deflect a Jayden Roberts shot over the top.
The dismissal of Crookes, for a rash challenge on 53 minutes, changed the dynamic of the game and AFP continued to press and press but without being able to find the breakthrough which would have got them right back in it.
Day was named Man of the Match.
Rotherham’s Mayor Rukhsana Ismail presented the trophy and the awards in her final duty before ending her Mayoral Year this week.
