Our carp pond has been the subject of many a conversation over these past few years.

Despite our committee asking our carp anglers so send in their captures, it can seem that nothing is ever caught.

But our member Gary Walker has done fabulously well over this season, showing just how to do it .

Just because it’s w**d or the lilly’s are plentiful don’t let it out you off .

Rummaging through some old papers and I came across a file of old press cutting from the Steel News, I started writing them in 1979 and finished in August 1995. This particular one refers to an earlier one published in July 1981 which in turn had been stimulated by comments from Tommy Pickering that orange (chrysoidine) maggots were finished and the red ones were the ones to use. Tommy's coments got me thinking. I'd looked for a red dye a few years before and all I could find was Auromine, which did't colour maggots effectively. I realised then that red dye was fed into the bait not used on the siurface like chrysoidine. Part of my search however took me to dye manufacturers and to Sheffield University all of whom told me that anglers were mad to use such carcinogenic cheminals as we did because they could be dangerous. In between the two (1981 and '82) word spread and there were reports of three midlands anglers dying which was attributed to the use of Chrysoidine.
