North Shields Athletic Reserves 6-1 Rothbury Football Club

Rothbury travelled to North Shields on Friday night in blustery conditions, looking to build on their steady start to the campaign. Unfortunately, it proved to be a difficult evening for the Reds as they were well beaten by a strong North Shields side.

Rothbury found themselves 3-0 down at half-time, with goals from Green, an own goal and Spencer. A number of individual errors proved costly for Rothbury, allowing the hosts to take a commanding lead into the break.

After a few words in the dressing room, Rothbury came out with a renewed sense of purpose in the second half. The Reds moved the ball quicker and began to create more opportunities, looking to get Coe and Aynsley into dangerous positions.

However, North Shields extended their advantage when another mistake at the back gifted Crass a simple tap-in to make it 4-0.

Rothbury made multiple changes in an attempt to change the dynamic of the game and were eventually rewarded with a goal. Macpherson reacted quickest during a scramble inside the box to fire home and give the Reds a consolation.

Despite the goal, North Shields remained in control and added two further goals to complete a comprehensive 6-1 victory.

A deserved win for the home side, but a performance well below the standards Rothbury have set themselves this season. The Reds will now look to regroup and return to winning ways when they face Hexham at home in the Minor Cup on 19th September.

Rothbury Football Club 2-0 Wallsend Boys Club Reserves

Rothbury ran out comfortable winners on Saturday against Wallsend Boys Club Reserves. The game started fairly evenly with the Reds enjoying the better of the physical battle and Wallsend playing some neat football.

As the first half progressed, Rothbury gained a foothold and started to exert pressure on the visitors goal and that pressure paid off when excellent work from man of the match Joe Aynsley (sponsored by Kyle Smith Plumbing and Heating) saw him out strength the defender to find a shooting angle which was saved into the path of the returning Paul Dunn (sponsored by Young’s Electrical Contractors) who slotted home.

Moments later, Rothbury doubled their lead, with Iwan Read taking advantage of the Wallsend keeper being sin binned. As he advanced down the right flank, Iwan (sponsored by Ayre Property Services) hit a speculative “shot” that found its way into the goal, described as a top corner rocket by the scorer himself!!!

The second half followed a similar pattern with Wallsend enjoying large spells of possession but defended excellently by the Reds. Rothbury had chances to extend their lead but had to settle for the 2-0 win, a pleasing victory for Proudlock’s men with a clean sheet and 3 points to move up to 7th in the table.

Whitley Bay Sporting Club 2-2 Rothbury Football Club

After a last-minute change of venue, Wednesday night’s fixture was moved to Alnwick Town’s St James’ Park, where the points were shared after an entertaining and evenly contested game.

With a good playing surface underfoot, Rothbury started brightly and looked to take the game to Whitley Bay, winning a number of corners after some excellent work down both flanks. Unfortunately, the Reds were unable to make their early pressure count.

Whitley Bay took the lead after 17 minutes when Dawson finished well following a good move from the hosts. Rothbury responded just five minutes later, with Nelson winning a penalty after a mazy run into the box. Coe stepped up and calmly dispatched the spot-kick for his fifth goal of the season.

The Reds continued to work hard, with the shape looking much improved as the first half drew to a close.

Whitley Bay started the second half on the front foot and regained the lead just three minutes after the restart. A dangerous cross from the right was dealt with by Woodburn, but his clearance unfortunately bounced straight off Best and into the back of the net. A huge slice of misfortune for the Reds.

Rothbury looked to change things after the hour mark, with Hedley introduced to help create more opportunities going forward. The change paid off, as the Reds found their equaliser with 20 minutes remaining. Aynsley showed good composure to find the bottom corner through a crowd of bodies from the edge of the box, making it 2-2.

Both sides had opportunities to sn**ch all three points during the closing stages. The best chance fell to Coe, whose effort looked destined for the top corner, only for Guthrie to produce an excellent save to force the ball wide.

In the end, a draw was a fair reflection of an evenly matched contest, with the Reds showing plenty of character to twice come from behind and earn a valuable point on the road.

Rothbury are back in action on Saturday when they welcome Wallsend Boys Club to Armstrong Park, with kick-off at 2pm.
