Walking around Ross has so many beautiful landscapes and special things to discover. I've just walked up the iconic May Hill, with its views across 7 counties. The top is stunning, windy and a tribute to Queens Victoria and Elizabeth II... But equally the walk up or down from different directions can be glorious, with the ponies grazing, niche houses, woodland - and I loved discovering this incredible stand of Douglas Fir... don't forget to look up at the tree tops and feel the spongy outer bark...

For some fabulous woodland walks, join Ross Walking Festival www.walkinginross.co.uk, the last weekend of September. Walk 16 is a gentle walk up to the top of May Hill and back: but Walks 3, 10 and 11 are also fabulous and different woodland walks to explore. Ross Walkers are Welcome would love to welcome you to join us - based in one of the most iconic small towns in the UK, with masses of independent shops, quirky lanes, friendly people and so much to explore!

Want to get out, but finding the weather too hot to walk far? Head to the woods!

We are really lucky to live in an area with such wonderful countryside and lots of woods to explore. Of course the biggest and oldest is the Forest of Dean - the amazing Sculpture Trail that changes its massive installations regularly; or my favourite and most peaceful, is to head out from top Symmonds Yat carpark where marked trails head out in all directions and distances. An easy flat walk goes along the riverside at Symmonds Yat, the trail of an old railway - accessed from either side if you want to use the hand ferry - but it does get busy...

Smaller and quieter are Queens Wood/ Dymock Woods in the Kempley/ Upton Bishop/ Gorsley area; or Newent Woods around May Hill - with the Glasshouse pub for refreshments; and of course, closer to home Penyard and Chase hills with a network of footpaths.

Happy walking everyone!

Why join a Walking Festival? - is 2026 the year to give it a try...

Walking Festivals offer locally guided walks, local themed walks, walks with inside knowledge of special routes & features, and often head off the beaten track. They run over several days, giving opportunities to pack in lots of variety within a weekend – sometimes two different walks in a day – as well as exploring new areas. They will offer walks for different levels of ability and fitness; and are a safe and easy way to meet fellow walkers, and even make new lasting friends…

Above all, walking festivals are a celebration of our great outdoors!

We'd love you to join us this year! Tickets are selling really well this year so pick your favourites and get it in the diary!

For 17 years Ross-on-Wye has hosted a Walking Festival - almost always on the last weekend in September. www.walkinginross.co.uk
It has attracted people from as far afield as the USA, Japan and Poland; as well as from all over the UK - many coming back year after year... This year's Festival runs from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th September

The Festival has always been run by a small group of enthusiastic volunteers - and the first festival attracted 97 walkers - no mean feat! Over the years, the core team have expanded and changed - but some of the original team are still key members! It is an amazing group and thanks to every one of them for all they contribute to Ross-on-Wye! Now we have 300-400 walkers, and tickets this year are selling faster than ever!

We would love to see all our old friends and many new ones for 2026 and looking forward to walking our updated programme - over 1/3rd of the walks being new for this year. For booking and all information about coming to/ staying in Ross visit our website:

Nearly 130 tickets already sold for the 2026 Ross Walking Festival.
With a break in the rain we ventured out onto part of Walk 12 - from Gorsley to Ross. The walk starts off through some of Gorsley's amazing orchards and meadows; to the village of Linton and its very ancient yew in the churchyard. Then down by lakes and follows the Rudhall Brook. Its a great moderate walk, through varied Herefordshire countryside and lots of interesting things to see along the way...
Even in the winter, there is lots to catch the eye.
