Dear GGKCR riders

It is with regret that we write to you to inform you that we've made the very difficult decision to cancel this year's Goatham's sponsored Great Kent Cycle Ride.

Having postponed from the original dates of 3rd - 5th July 2020, giving us as much time as possible to see if we could stage the event later in the year, it has become apparent that taking an event of this size around Kent over three days isn't currently possible or viable.

When cancelling an event of this nature, every consideration is made as to whether we could go ahead with some subtle changes, but we have investigated all options and none of them allow us to put on an event of the type that has proven to be so popular for the last three years.

Losing the Goatham's Great Kent Cycle Ride from this year leaves Kent Sports Trust struggling for survival and we will be doing all we can to ensure we adapt to carry on once all the restrictions have been lifted.

As a result, we will be working hard to put all of our efforts into staging an even bigger and better event in 2021.

Because of this, we would be eternally grateful if you would consider deferring your place in this year's ride to next year, allowing us to begin the planning process for 2021. We will be exploring new dates in the coming weeks and will let you know as soon as we have confirmed the weekend it will now take place in 2021.

All registration fees paid and any fundraising already received will then just be transferred to next year. If, however, you do wish to receive a refund please get in contact and this can be arranged for you.

Kent Sports Trust would not exist without the support of our
fundraisers and it allows us to carry out the work we do in the
community, all currently suspended due to the restrictions.

Working in schools, young offender institutes, with homeless people and across the community, we pride ourselves on being able to come up with innovative solutions to support people with their physical and mental health.

When we come out of the restricted period, we will need funding more than ever to help even more people across Kent and we would welcome any fundraising ideas that you may have to help us at this very difficult time.

Having Goatham's as our headline sponsor since the start of the Great Kent Cycle Ride has been invaluable to us as a team and we really do appreciate the commitment they have shown to both the ride and Kent Sports Trust as a whole.

In a time of such uncertainty, it's great to have such unwavering support from a family run business that is passionate about helping others here in Kent.

We also appreciate all of the support you have shown us in the past and we hope to see you all some time again soon.

In the meantime, we hope you all have a great summer and have lots of opportunities to get out and cycle some of the breathtaking Kent countryside.

Very many thanks for your patience and understanding.

Best wishes

The GGKCR Team

Even though we couldn't start our 4th event today, both Adrian Kitto and Steven Law have decided to do most of the planned route over the space of two days, leaving Goatham's this morning and will do the second part from Rye back on Saturday. Bravo chaps!

It is with regret that we're having to get in touch to inform you that we've made the decision to postpone this year's Goatham's Great Kent Cycle Ride.

It's not a decision we as a team have taken lightly and have given it as long as possible, getting all the facts before making a decision. Following the Prime Minister's announcement on Sunday evening and some clarity from Dominic Raab on Monday morning, it became clear that starting the event on Friday 3rd July was now impossible with the hospitality industry unable to resume until Saturday 4th July at the earliest.

We take the health and safety of our riders, event team and partners extremely seriously and would never make a decision that would put anyone in harm's way and we hope you all understand the very difficult position we find ourselves in.

However, we haven't given up hope of staging GGKCR at some point this year. We have been consulting with Dave and the team at Cycle Tec to look at some prospective dates in both September and October. We will inform you of those dates in the coming days once we have some clarity on what may be possible.

Staging the event obviously takes a lot of logistical planning and we are also consulting with the hotels, lunch providers and other partners to see what may be viable this year.

In the meantime, we would welcome feedback from the riders already signed up, so do drop us an email at [email protected] with any suggestions or offers of support.

The Goatham's sponsored Great Kent Cycle Ride is the biggest event in the calendar for Kent Sports Trust and it provides a large chunk of the funding that enables us to support people across the county. Without this, we wouldn't survive and we urge you to carry on your fundraising to help us in a position to support more people than ever when we emerge from this global pandemic.

To that aim, we have planned to do a GGKCR "Virtual team ride" on Saturday 4th July to bring everyone together and show our support for one another. We're in the process of working out the finer details, but it will give everyone the chance to get on their bikes, either on a turbo or out in the countryside (observing social distancing and other rules that may be in place at that time).

We are hopeful that Coronavirus leads to a cultural shift with more people cycling in the long term, so let's hope that GGKCR can be staged at some point this year and show how good it is for our physical and mental health.

The GGKCR team can't thank you all enough for your support.

The Goatham's sponsored Great Kent Cycle Ride planned for 3rd-5th July 2020 is still scheduled to go ON as things stand. After careful consideration and in consultation with our partners Cycle-tec, we plan to review the situation at the end of April, but looking at British Cycling guidance, we believe we still can stage what could be a great event, so keep training where safe and possible!

The miles are in for this year's ride with the recce all but complete. Day one (black) will be 68 miles with a stop at the Shepherd Neame brewery for lunch. Day two (blue) is the longest of the three days - 80 miles, but we stop for lunch at the gorgeous Gusbourne vineyard with free wine tasting. We end the ride with just 60 miles on Day three (red) and a surprise lunchtime venue. So just the 208 miles...
