Medway Tai Chi Society

Medway Tai Chi Society .. Welcome to the Medway Tai Chi Society! WHO ARE WE? We are a small group who enjoy learning and practicing the Chinese Martial Art of Tai Chi. WHAT IS TAI CHI?

Tai Chi (also known as T'ai Chi Chuan, or Tai Ji Quan) is a Chinese martial art. It uses soft, flowing movements to exercise the body and calm the mind. More advanced practitioners can also use the movements for self defence. WHAT DOES TAI CHI DO? As a health exercise: it helps to improve circulation, posture, balance and deep breathing. It helps to strengthen the body, without making excessive ph

ysical demands. It is, therefore, an ideal system for slowing down the negative effects of aging. As a method of relaxation: Tai Chi seeks to release excess tension from the muscles. It also helps to calm the mind and relieve stress. As a method of Self Protection: Tai Chi was developed from the famous Shaolin Kungfu methods, and adapted to reflect Taoist theory. It seeks to utilise softness to overcome hardness, so allowing a smaller, physically weaker person to defend themselves against a larger, stronger opponent. WHERE ARE CLASSES? We meet in the grounds of Rochester Castle, in Rochester, Kent. If it is raining on the day, we may move down to Rochester Pier, on the Esplande between the castle and the river. WHAT DO I NEED TO START? There is no need for any special uniform or training equipment. Wearing loose-fitting, comfortable clothes, and trainers is absolutely fine. As we practice outside in the open, we strongly suggest checking the weather in the morning and dressing accordingly - coats/jackets, gloves, hats etc. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? All of our classes are completely FREE, so why not come along and discover the many benefits of Tai Chi for yourself? Call us, or drop us an email for more details!

I found out today that Grand Master Wong Kiew Kit passed away at the beginning of March.
Although our systems are not linked, Master Wong's books were very inspirational to me in my early Tai Chi days.

I highly recommend his books to those eho want to broaden their tai chi and qigong experience.

In the morning of March 1st, 2026, our beloved Sifu, Wong Kiew Kit, passed away peacefully.

Today, we mourn not only a teacher but a shining example of wisdom, compassion, discipline, and joy. Sifu leaves behind an extraordinary legacy — one that spans continents, generations of students, and countless lives transformed through the arts and philosophy he so generously shared.

His teachings were not merely techniques; they were invitations to live with clarity, courage, and kindness. He showed us what it means to practice Shaolin arts with heart, integrity, and commitment.

Though he has left us, his spirit remains in our practice, in our conduct, and in the way we uplift others. The greatest tribute we can offer is to continue walking the path he showed us.

We warmly invite students, friends, and family to share memories, stories, and experiences of Sifu here. Let us celebrate the life of a remarkable master by remembering the joy and wisdom he brought into the world.

With deep gratitude and respect. 🙏
