199 Medals AGAINST ALL ODDS

Team DOJO returnS from WORLD Martial Arts Championships with 199 Medals

48 members of the 51 squad from The DOJO Karate Centre (Rochdale, Oldham, Middleton) returned from the WMAGC World Championships with an amazing 199 medals (68 Gold, 77 Silver, 54 Bronze) held in Oslo, Norway 7th-9th NOV.

These 48 members were part of the 132 Team GB athletes and performed excellently against other countries to win its biggest ever international medal haul.

Team GB & DOJO Coach, Sensei IRFAN ANSARI said ‘I’d like to dedicate this year’s success to the phrase AGAINST ALL ODDS. We were up against world class opposition, especially from Team USA who brought 250 athletes and were funded and fully supported. However, despite absolutely zero funding or support from any council for our athletes, and against all odds, parents worked really hard to skimp, save and borrow money to fulfil their child’s dream of attending the World Championships. Through their sheer dedication and our coaching methods, our competitors really raised their game and shone through to put Rochdale on the World map.

‘Since 2007 we have a robust coaching method that has consistently produced the highest number of World Champs right here in the Rochdale Borough. For sustained growth from among our talent base, our athletes need to be supported financially to pay for flights, hotel, transportation, physio treatments, kits, insurances and entry fees by the local companies and especially by the Council. This year it has cost close to £1500 per athlete, if not more. Lack of funding deters members from attending the following World Champs and attrition soon follows. So many highly talented athletes, right here in Rochdale borough have been lost, simply because of lack of funding for them. This is a real shame for Rochdale! We should not have to start from grass roots every year!’

Another achievement by Team DOJO was, like last year at the European Champs, this year Team DOJO was again the largest individual Club that represented their country at the World Champs, and, to have won such a large haul of medals

Team DOJO members competed in many events, Kata, Weapons Kata, Pairs Kata, Team Kata, Kumite, Point Kickboxing, Self-defence, Continuous Kickboxing competitions.

Sensei ANSARI was also given the honour to be 1 of 4 Rules Arbitrators for the World Championships, and received an award for all his work in preparing Team GB for the World Champs by the WMAGC Secretary General, Chris Hemstock.

Also, Sensei NATALIE DEAN from The DOJO Karate Centre was the Team GB Female Captain.

Team DOJO COACHES were made up of Irfan Ansari, Jacki Lawrence, Huseyn Mikayilov, Isshaaq Ansari and Natalie Dean, who have worked tirelessly through the last year to raise performances of Team DOJO. We thank them all for their amazing insights they have shared with all Team DOJO members to bring success to Rochdale Borough and surrounding areas of Middleton and Oldham.

Thanks also to Assistant Coaches Jeet, Diya, Kisha, Maryam, Andrew, Helal, Saif, Robert, who all were at hand to help Coaches do their job efficiently mat-side.

Best performances from Team DOJO were from ABDULLAH ISHAQ-SHAHID (6 Golds, 2 Silvers, 3 Bronze).

From the Junior Squad Best performance was from ELONIE GOODFELLOW (6 Golds, 2 Silvers, 2 Bronze).

From all the Adults in Team DOJO, best performance was from Sensei NATALIE DEAN (4 Golds, and 1 Silver)

In closing Sensei ANSARI said ‘A special thanks has to go to the parents for their dedication, support for each other, camaraderie, joy and team work in making it go smoothly was great to see – long may it continue!

DOJO Black Belt Club rises by 3
3 young ladies performed excellently to become BLACK BELTS yesterday. They are Zahra (1st Dan), Minahil (1st Dan) and Kisha (2nd Dan).

They all performed excellently to pass all sections of the Grading including the Fitness section, preparation for which is often overlooked by members at this stage.

Zahra became the 3rd youngest Black Belt in The DOJO's history aged just 8yrs, and boy is she fearless! This is a huge achievement for someone so young.

Her sister Minahil also passed at the same time, much to the tears of joy of their mother watching the results from the side.

Kisha had struggled with Fitness in the past, but a diligent effort resulted in success this time, showing once again, that only with purposeful endeavour can we achieve great things!

Many congratulations girls - we're all proud of your success so far, with many more to come.

CLASS LEADER Qualifications for Maryam and Alfie
Massive Congratulations to Maryam and Alfie for achieving their DOJO Class Leader award that involves shadowed coaching in class followed by practical, theory and verbal assessments.

It typically costs £7000 to become a DOJO Coach and takes a long time to achieve, however we offer it completely FREE to our selected members.

Sensei Ansari said 'We are proud of Maryam and Alfie to have passed the first rung of the coaching ladder. They are both on our World Champs Squad going to Norway later this year to compete in the World Champs. They are now working towards the much tougher DOJO INSTRUCTOR AWARD in earnest which will allow them to run their own classes under the auspices of The DOJO.'

DOJO Charity Work on MALAWI
All I can say is that it was a very humbling experience for both myself (Hanshi Irfan) and Dr & Sensei Issmaeel.

We stayed in Cape Maclear which is a beautiful place. However, the people are so poor and yet so lovely and so hospitable. The only food they depend on is the Fish they catch from Lake Malawi and the Maze they grow in the fields. But with the rains arriving 2 months late for the last 2 years, they have to rely on many handouts. There are no Grocery shops or any fresh produce, only small shops that bring in the snacks to sell to the locals. There is Electricity that switches off intermittently, but no Gas, so they rely on firewood which they go out to collect and if they can afford it they buy coal.

Issmaeel was the only Doctor in Monkey Bay Hospital. Yes you read it right, they don't have any doctors in the Hospital (only clinical staff + nurses), and only visiting doctors from abroad come to help out. He was constantly working each day while the hospital was open, with extremely limited resources, instruments and medicines. Poor man only got the SAT + SUN off while we were there for the 12 days.

He delivered many babies and took care of C-sections, and many other surgeries. He also attended 2 outreach clinics where people travel barefoot from upto 20km just to be seen for 10mins.

I even got involved by checking everyone's Blood Pressure the old way using an old stethoscope + arm collar (no Sphyg to be seen anywhere)!

See what I mean about it being a humbling experience. We just take all of this for granted here in our country!

On one occasion, on my request, because I had heard a Tourguide tell me about his 7yr daughter's plight, we went late at night to see her. He must have spent a good 45mins assessing her late development of Club Foot and writing reports for future treatment for his colleagues at Monkey Bay Hospital. He hopes she will be fully recovered and able to walk independently in about 2yrs.

My role entailed providing Karate Classes to all the Schools, the Tour Guides and the Police in the area. They had never experienced anything like this. They all took to it very well.

On my first day the Headteacher of the only High School in the area came to collect me in his car (which was a big thing for them as it is seen as a huge sign of respect) and take me to his school. On the way we discussed the Education system in Malawi where everyone has to pay for education, and you stay in the same class until you pass. Here is the class I coached first. The Kids were told beforehand that the best boy and best girl would receive a medal from me - as you can imagine the conformity and effort in each class was very high...

Straight after, I coached the Tour Guides, and boy they were so excited to learn from me. Honestly they were more excited than the kids and enjoyed it so much that from that day onwards I had 2 Tour Guides es**rting me everywhere I wanted to go in Cape Maclear. They would be at our lodge waiting for me to come out of my room and wait for me to tell them what my plans were for the day. Then they would es**rt me to wherever I needed to go for my next session.

A couple of days later I did another session with them, and on the way to the Community Hub, I noticed a stick on the ground and asked them if it would be possible to have something similar for me to teach them stick drills. Well I only had to say it, and within 10mins there were 20 sticks available. Needless to say, they absolutely loved it. They were so competitive but also so encouraging of each other - laughter was also in the air - amazing!

There is so much for me to share with you but time doesn't allow it here. So. I'll conclude with the photos below and by finally saying that I saw 15/16yr old kids in Primary Schools, not because they were too thick to progress onto the next class, but because their parents didn't spare income to send them to school when they were younger. On Sunday we saw lots of kids play football in bare feet on a ground where if our kids stepped on it we would be so worried about their feet getting poked with shard bricks, roots and bushes. Those who did a pair of shoes, shared it with another team mate. So the right wing would wear the right shoe, and the left wing would wear the left.

On my journey I shared lots of insights of how the leaders of Cape Maclear can make their place a whole lot better which they took on board sincerely. I vouched to continue supporting them with coaching videos and to perhaps provide free qualification to some PE staff in School to start coaching martial arts in their classes. Watch this space!

Oh by the way, the money people gave for Zakat and for Sadaqa was given to the Masjid there which they used for a Loudspeaker system. Now the adhaan can be heard upto 70m away mashaallah.

My message to my members is before you complain about our life here, just put yourself in the shoes (may in the bare feet) of the kids in Cape Maclear - and be grateful for the blessings we do have.

We would like to thank Zoe + Salemani for guiding us through our journey and transporting Issmaeel to/from Hospital and Clinics. Salemani, I really enjoyed your company. Keep up the Good work guys. Love and Respect to you both.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION for JACKI
Sensei Jacki received special recognition (and a beautiful Crystal) from Rochdale Parent Carers' group for saving a child's life during our 'Karate in the Community' program.

The child became distressed and ran into severe breathing difficulties. Then Jacki remembered and applied a particular revival technique she learned from Sensei Ansari over 2 decades ago on the child and with the blessing of the Almighty, he recovered.

We at The Dojo Karate Centre are proud to have home grown Instructors who show empathy & care and genuine interest in the development of each member on in our classes.

Well done Jacki for quickly thinking on your feet that ended in saving a life. You never know this young man just might grow up to contribute immensely to our society in a positive way!

Torch Bearers of Tomorrow attend DOJO Coaches Seminar.
In keeping with out club motto of "Making a brighter future for our Children – Working to improve our Community” The DOJO held a FREE Coaching Seminar for invited members last SUN.

38 members attended the Seminar lasting 3hrs and greatly benefited from the knowledge shared by Sensei ANSARI.

To become a coach it typically costs £6500 each, and the Seminar they attended costs £60 each with The DOJO providing £2,280 worth of service for FREE. If all become instructors in time, The DOJO would have provided £247,000 worth of Qualifications for FREE.

Since Covid, we have provided close to £25,500 worth of workshops and seminars for FREE to our members.

Wow! Wow! Wow!

What does that say about The DOJO Karate Centre?

I know what it says... I know for a fact that NO OTHER CLUB has ever done anything like this in all my years in martial arts....!
And as illustrated in our motto above, we take our Community's and Members' future career prospects and personal development extremely seriously.

Those who work hard get rewarded in life!

We love sharing our knowledge guys especially to those who are willing to persevere in life and realise that....

"The Biggest Room in the World is the ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT"
... and then actively take steps to become the best in anything purposeful they choose.

You'll start to see more of these people come to help you in class to raise your understanding & performance.

Well done to all who attended - you have now all enrolled onto The DOJO Instructor Program.
