Part II. Stillwater session with Ahmad. Windy, east wind, water clear, surface temp 18°C. Boat and bank.

Started boat fishing with snakes, moved onto droppers and double rigs, ended up on 14ft leaders with single nymphs.

17 hooked, 13 landed. Lake trout, browns and rainbows, best fish 8.5lb.

Highlight: sight-casting to big browns with PTNs on a 4-weight.

River Burn session: 25 fish hooked, 4 landed. His first ever fish on the fly, a beautiful brown trout. Then his first grayling. Then his first fish on the dry. Non-stop action and some seriously good casting.

Throwback to 5 years ago. Marina and Stephan visited and after visiting his shop fell in love with his Salar tweed cap. Has been wearing it ever since. And now 5 years later, a collab between LOOP X SALAR with their very own tweed. And it is now available on our website www.northernfishingco.com and in our shop at Swinton Estate. Jody and Rose fished with us on a bright and sunny day (is there even any other conditions right now?!). We fished the River Ure for the first half, which made it easier to hone in some casting practice, then spent a couple of hours on the Burn where we could shelter from the sun.

The day was spent hunting out the last bits of moving water, reading the river and working out where fish would be holding, then presenting to them with dry-dropper rigs and shortline European nymphing on the 10ft 2-weight.

The reward: trout and grayling in the net, across both the euro and conventional setups. A mixed bag like that on a hard, bright day says everything about how well it was fished.
