Understanding the Pilates Method – Day 11

Why I continue to teach the Pilates Method

After many years of teaching, what continues to inspire me about the Pilates Method is its depth.

The exercises are simple in appearance, yet they continually reveal new awareness about how the body moves and works. Each day is different, some days we feel stronger than others especially as we age.

Helping people develop that awareness β€” and seeing their posture, confidence and movement improve over time β€” remains one of the most satisfying aspects of teaching for me.

✨ The Pilates Method is a practice that continues to teach both the student and the teacher.

Understanding the Pilates Method – Day 10

What people often notice after practising Pilates

After some time practising the Pilates Method, people often begin to notice small changes.

Standing feels easier.

Breathing becomes calmer.

Movement through the spine feels more fluid.

Many people say they begin to notice how they sit, stand and move during everyday life.

For me as a teacher, this growing awareness is one of the most rewarding parts of the method.

✨ The Pilates Method gradually teaches us to understand our own bodies.

Understanding the Pilates Method – Day 9

Exercises are introduced gradually and progressively in the Pilates Method.

The work is organised so that the body gradually develops the strength, coordination and control needed for more demanding exercises.

Early exercises help establish awareness of alignment and movement.

As the body becomes stronger and more balanced, more challenging exercises can be introduced.

This progression allows the body to develop safely while building a deeper understanding of movement.

✨ Each exercise prepares the body for the next.

Understanding the Pilates Method – Day 8

Why the Pilates Method uses apparatus

The Pilates Method includes a range of apparatus such as the reformer, cadillac and chair.

Each piece was designed by Joseph Pilates to help the body learn movement in different ways.

The springs provide resistance and also feedback, helping people feel how their body is organising during the exercise.

Some apparatus can support the body while learning a movement, while others challenge strength, balance and control.

Together with the matwork, the apparatus form a complete system designed to develop balanced strength, better posture and greater body awareness.

✨ The apparatus are tools that help teach the body how to move more efficiently.

Understanding the Pilates Method – Day 7

Pilates responds to the individual

In the Pilates Method, exercises are not simply given to everyone in exactly the same way.

Each person arrives with different posture, strengths, imbalances and movement habits.

A Pilates teacher observes the body carefully and may choose, adapt or omit exercises so the work supports the individual safely and effectively.

Even when several people are working at the same time, the teacher is still observing how each person moves and offering guidance where it is needed.

Through this process, the client gradually develops greater awareness of their own body β€” how they stand, move and organise themselves in everyday life.

✨ Pilates is a method of teaching movement, not simply a workout.

Understanding the Pilates Method – Day 6

Things a Pilates teacher notices quickly

After many years of teaching, certain patterns in the body become very familiar.

Often I notice:

β€’ how someone stands
β€’ how their weight is distributed through the feet
β€’ how freely their spine moves
β€’ whether the shoulders or hips are working harder than they need to

These patterns can influence posture and movement over time.

The Pilates Method helps bring awareness to these habits and gradually rebalance the body so movement becomes more efficient and comfortable.

Understanding the Pilates Method – Day 5

Why does posture matter?

Good posture allows the body to move efficiently. When the body is well aligned, muscles and joints can work together with less strain.

Modern habits such as long periods of sitting can gradually affect posture. For example, sitting for many hours can cause the hip flexor muscles at the front of the hips to become tight, while other muscles such as the glutes and those supporting the spine may become weaker or less active.

The Pilates Method helps to rebalance the body by strengthening some muscles while encouraging others to lengthen and release.

Through controlled movement and careful attention to alignment, the body gradually learns to move in a more balanced and efficient way.

Over time this can help us move more comfortably in everyday activities such as walking, working, lifting and exercising.
