34-year-old Mike Egan from Llandudno has set his sights on a return to the ring after overcoming cancer.
A prestigious career spanning 2 decades, Mike Egan has won it all, from the IMTKA World Chanpionship to WBC Nation Title. Fighting across the world with a fight record of 61-19-1, he is recognised as one of North Wales' most notorious fighters.
After being diagnosed with non-hodgkin's lymphoma, Mike was forced to take a break from his fighting career to focus on beating the cancer.
June, 2022 saw Mike win the biggest fight of his career as he overcome the cancer and was given the all clear. Never to be stopped Mike continued with his fight events and continued to train his students at The Immortals Gym-Thaiboxing-Wales.
With the all clear, Mike is ready to once again step back into the ring, saying "The minute I get the go ahead to start sparring again, the come back is on."
We spoke with Mike about his feelings throughout his journey, beating the cancer and the comeback, he said:
"When I was diagnosed I did what I think alot of other people do and I put myself straight in the misfortunate category, straight away I had every intention to do what it would take to get better, but not really knowing enough about it, I did worry that it may be the end of me, so at that point the only thing that was on my mind was to win the battle I was involved with at the time. As soon as I saw abit of light at the end of the tunnel, the idea of fighting went to the forefront of my mind."
"One of the things they mentioned to me in the hospital was people who exercise and eat well do best with the treatment, so I did as much of both as I could, one of the nurses said to not let it take over my life because what Iโd been through was horrific, so I made it a point to make sure I didnโt.
I went back to working at gym 13 as soon as I could, weโve done 3 interclubs and 1 fight night this year so far with another 1 of both planned soon. I felt like I had to start from scratch with the club because of the time Iโd had off but itโs flying again now."
"I was in my back garden and my oncologist called me up and told me over the phone the good news, I felt like for a very long time before I got the news I was just counting down the days until it happened, but I was just desperate to hear it. The levels of pride I had in my self where off the scale."
"My plans going forward are to keep building the gym and my promotion as much as I can, I would say donโt be surprised if you see me back in there, I donโt want to feel like it ever took anything away from me, other than that, just enjoying my personal life with my good lady as much as I can.
You set a lot of goals as a fighter and it takes alot of your focus, itโs great to have both, you need to apply it to the real world though just as much as fighting, so you know what your doing with your life when your not competing anymore."
