Good afternoon everyone, it is with great sadness that we have to today announce that our club, league and general gentleman stalwart Peter Chegwidden has passed away. He passed away yesterday and although unexpectedly he was peaceful and at home.
Peter has been not only a member, League player, team captain, committee member, club secretary and many more things over the decades to the snooker club and leagues that he has been involved with. But most importantly he has been one of our closest and most respected friends. And most of us also look at him like a family member as he has always been there and for everyone through different generations through the clubs history.
We would like to take this opportunity to express our deepest thoughts and sympathies to Peters family and that we will continue to support and help them in any way we can as long as they want us to.
As a Mark of respect the club will be closed to all members this weekend.
Anyone who was close to, knew of or has even just had the pleasure of meeting and being in Peters presence know what a genuine, caring, loyal and honest person he was who lived life to the fullest until his final moments.
He continued with all his activities until his final time even with playing snooker only this Tuesday 9/11/21, where although he lost he continued battling to the very end. Still a very good snooker player at 93 and often still beating those he shouldn’t at this age and taking the mickey out of them when doing so! I’m sure we have all heard the line ‘ beaten by a 93 year old’ with a chuckle then ‘better keep practising’
Peter will sorely be missed by many many people as he has so many friends and has been involved wholeheartedly with so many things throughout his life away from the snooker club such as, Illogan parish church, Penwartha, multiple snooker leagues and other competitions, as well as being a local to the village of Illogan for all of his life.
Peter always gave everything to everyone and would always support, advise and help others and we as club members know how many people he has inspired and will continue to do so through his memory.
I’m sure everyone will be sharing stories jokes and yarns about Peter and the times we have all enjoyed with him, the humour, the competitiveness, the organisation, his honesty in the form of bluntness, when needed to be, but always followed by a chuckle and smile. But most importantly the time and compassion he had for everyone and anyone. Always willing to listen and just be there for people no matter the day or time.
Peter always made time and gave opportunities, support and help to others often without consideration for himself or the effects to him to see others happy. Peter was also often known for helping people without even realising it by something he said, a joke he made or by showing someone something they didn’t know or understand. Again this was not just through snooker but the number of people he has helped over the years in helping find loved ones in Illogan church graveyard or helping with general church running and most importantly to Peter his family.
Peter you will always be missed but you will certainly never be forgotten, your legacy will go on. Within the club, the league and through your family. Your achievements of being what we understand as the mining and godolphin leagues oldest player at 93.
your nomination for local hero of the year in 2019 which was sadly scuppered by covid.
And especially your interview with Cornwall live after you turned 90 and the article of ‘Cornwalls potting Pensioner’ will live long in the memory and shared with those who haven’t had the chance to know you.
everyone else who has had the pleasure to know and spend time with you will remember you with fondness and smiles whether they remember you as the organised, determined, loyal individual who loved sorting money and chasing people when they owed you even 20p!or the cheeky, belly laughing, sighing when someone gets luck against you and chuckling when you get lucky against them. Peter you were all of these and so much more to us all.
A person who made an impact to so many who met you in a positive way.
You truly were a wonderful friend to us all no matter our age, background or anything else you treated everybody with the respect and humility A gentleman in the truest sense of the word.
A scholar and gentleman to the end. Rest in peace Peter Chegwidden 11/11/2021 The club will not be the same without you.
