Lunge lessons are one of my favorite things to teach and also to receive! I was lunged A LOT as a kid, and I’m a firm believer that you can always work on your seat and always improve your ability to move with the horse and communicate more clearly.

Why bother? Lungeing the rider is one of the only times the rider gets to focus almost exclusively on themselves. The ground person makes the horse go, tells the horse to do a transition, helps to drive them forward or slow them down, etc. And the rider can really focus on feeling the movement and finding the correct position.

Lunge lessons can take many forms, but over the next few days I’m going to write about my favorite exercises and how I assess a rider’s strengths and weaknesses.

Of course, not every horse is a good lunge horse. Some are definitely not safe enough to take away a rider’s reins and stirrups and lead them through these exercises. BUT most horses can learn to be good citizens for this, and it is good for them!! If your horse absolutely cannot go quietly walk, trot and canter for you on the lunge, I’ll go out on a limb and say he is not very well trained. 🤔
