🏖️On Sunday at Beach Base reminded me of something I've believed for a long time.

We often think progress comes from adding more. More money. More buildings. More people. More resources.
Sometimes it does.

But sometimes the biggest breakthroughs come from connecting what we already have.

Sunday wasn't just about swimming, cycling or running. It was about local organisations, volunteers, businesses, community groups, elected representatives, including our MP, Anna Turley, and, most importantly, the competitors and families who turned up ready to have a go.

From first-time swimmers to seasoned cyclists and runners, everyone contributed to an atmosphere that was welcoming, encouraging and full of community spirit. Watching people challenge themselves, cheer each other on and enjoy our coastline together was a real privilege.

There's an old saying about making gold from straw. To me, it isn't about magic. It's about looking at ordinary things differently. Seeing possibilities where others see limitations. Creating more value from what already exists.

Beach Base has always had the potential to be more than a building by the sea. Days like yesterday showed what can happen when people, organisations and public bodies come together around a shared purpose.
A heartfelt thank you to British Triathlon, every partner organisation, the volunteers, the competitors, the spectators and everyone who helped make the day such a success.

☀️🌊Here's to many more days like this.

Looking for a fun outdoor activity for you and your family?

On 28 June, British Triathlon and partners are launching the Redcar Swim Bike Run Partnership with a free event at Majuba Beach. Join us from 12 noon and get involved in a variety of family friendly activities open to all.

The day will start with some fun family friendly activities and a Yoga session between 12pm - 1pm.

Want to try something new or feel up for a challenge? Book onto the Swim Bike Run Mini which starts at 1pm - choose from an adult or family wave. This free event is the perfect chance to have fun with your family and friends, without the pressure of a formal competition. Choose whether to complete the swim, bike, run or all three activities – bikes and wetsuits are available to borrow on the day.

All you need to bring is your enthusiasm and curiosity to give Swim Bike Run a go.

If you’d like to come along, please use the voucher code RedcarSBR to book your free slot at https://www.britishtriathlon.org/events/swim-bike-run-mini-redcar_17492

⚠️ Content note: image contains unpleasant scenes of vandalism

Yesterday was a great day down at the Beach Base.
Loads of people out, good atmosphere, exactly what the space is there for.
Then our team checked the accessible toilet.
This is what they found.
Not wear and tear. Not an accident.
Deliberate, disrespectful behaviour.
Let’s be clear — this isn’t “just one of those things.”
It’s a small number of people making a mess for everyone else.
This facility is there for the public, including those who rely on accessible provision.
When it’s left like this, it’s not us you’re affecting — it’s other users.
Our team will clean it, like they always do.
But this is a constant battle we shouldn’t be fighting.
👉 Respect the space
👉 Respect the people who use it
👉 Respect the team who look after it
If you wouldn’t do it in your own home, don’t do it here.
We do keep an eye on things, and incidents like this don’t go unnoticed.
We’re proud of what we’re building at Redcar Beach Base.
Help us keep it somewhere everyone can enjoy
