Another great weekend of Wing Chun training at Wing Chun International Master Class run by GM Andrew Cameron and hosted at WCI Northampton. Some great ideas to take into the new year as we refine our training.
Big congratulations to Brad of WCI Northampton on achieving his 1st technician degree.
Also Marek from WCI Bicester for achieving his 1st technician degree.
And last but not least, me from WCI Reading on achieving my 2nd technicians degree 😁
A big thank you to everyone I've trained with and especially Sifu Jason Cooper for guiding me on my journey.

Everything around you is a tool—spot it, use it, escape. In a moment of danger, awareness becomes your greatest advantage. By noticing the objects and features in your immediate environment—doors, barriers, lights, people—you give yourself more options to create space and get to safety. The goal isn’t to fight, but to use your surroundings smartly to break contact and reach help. When you stay alert and resourceful, even ordinary things can support your path to escape.

Love this description of F**k Sau from Master Cameron. Not just from the perspective of Wing Chun but as a metaphor for life!

“F**k Sau — Build the bridge before you cross it.”

F**k Sau translates to “Bridge on arm.”

In Wing Chun, we don’t attack blindly. We build a bridge first, we make contact with the opponent’s arm, because their arm is always closer to us than their face. Once the bridge is built, we cross it. F**k Sau gives us the advantage because contact gives information. When you rest on the opponent’s arm, you can feel, pressure, direction, intention and hesitation. You’re no longer guessing, you’re reading the situation in real time. F**k Sau teaches patience and precision, connect first, act second. Once you have the bridge, you can attack with confidence, not hope. That’s the real power of F**k Sau.

Most conflict, at home, at work, with people, happens because we rush to attack without finding common ground. F**k Sau reminds us to build the bridge first. Make contact. Find the middle point. Understand the situation before pushing forward. When you connect first, you respond with clarity instead of reacting with emotion. Bridges create understanding. Understanding creates advantage.

Wing Chun isn’t just about fighting, it’s about learning how to connect before you act.

Here we have 9 core shapes that we use in Wing Chun. We can train these in a variety of ways, this being the simplest. Other ways can be to alternate arms, add punches, footwork ect. There are literely 100's of combinations you can use. Here is a short description of each shape.

B**g Sau (Wing Arm / Wing Hand) – Redirects incoming force upward and to the side using the elbow’s wing-like structure.

Tan Sau (Palm-Up Hand) – A supportive, palm-up forearm used to occupy the centerline and deflect attacks outward.

Jum Sau (Sinking Elbow) – A downward pressing forearm motion, using the elbow to sink and cover the centerline.

Gan Sau (Splitting/Chopping Hand) – A defensive movement using a chopping action for lower attacks.

Pak Sau (Slapping Hand) – A quick palm strike used to slap aside or control an incoming attack while creating an opening.

Lap Sau (Pulling Hand) – A grabbing and pulling action that draws the opponent off balance or clears their guard.

F**k Sau (Controlling Hand) – A “resting” forearm position used to feel, control, and maintain sensitivity on the opponent’s arm.

Kau Sau (Detaining/Hooking Hand) – A hooking or scooping motion to trap, control, or pull in the opponent’s arm.

Gam Sau (Pressing/Pinning Hand) – A pressing, pinning action with the palm or forearm to control the opponent’s arm downward.

One of our mottos at WCI Reading is "Avoid the fight at all cost's but if attacked, you must defend yourself." A key element to this strategy is being aware of your surroundings. Ask yourself these questions.
Are you paying attention to whose around you?
Are you walking late at night with you phone out listening to music in your own little world?
Do you know where your exits are if things turn violent?
Are there items around you that you can use as a weapon if needed?
Asking these questions can help reduce the possibility of an attack.
