The realities of running a family owned/run business =

๐Ÿคข 1 sick child = nursery wouldnโ€™t let him back for 48hrs โ›” (our only two days of paid nursery we have!๐Ÿ’ธ)

๐Ÿคข 1 adult struck down by the same sickness bug = 3 working days gone โŒ = not a lot of work happened last week! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

๐Ÿ† However, a massive win saw our name featured again in the VouchedFor Guide to Top Rated Financial Advisers as a Top Rated Financial Coach ๐Ÿ…= MUCH happier Fraser household ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜

We were super happy to celebrate this big win and see the recognition for the help we are providing working parents with their finances ๐Ÿ’ท . 169 positive reviews and counting = 4.9/5.0 rating. We must be doing something right. ๐Ÿ‘

I love what I do to help working parents ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ง ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ง ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ (whether that isโ€ฆfuture parents, soon to be parents, newbie parents and seasoned parents) to feel more confident with their money.

This could be figuring out how you can afford to have a child ๐Ÿšผ (or 2nd or 3rd), saving for your first family home ๐Ÿ  , moving to a bigger home ๐Ÿก (need the space!) or even saving for your childrens or your own future ๐Ÿ“Š .

Thank you so much to all my clients (past and present) for their feedback. I wouldn't have featured in this publication without you.

I have two small boys ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ who I do sometimes wonder what their world is going to look like in the future. How can I raise them to be kind? How can I raise them to be think for themselves? How can I help them be happy? Soooooo many questions but few definitive answers normally.

โญ๏ธ What about money? As a Financial Coach, how could I teach my children about money from an early age? How can I engage a young mind on this topic since all they want to do it watch Octonauts and play outside?

Will Rainey has written a wonderful blog post all about how you could approach this topic of money at different ages.

If you have children and want to know how you could talk to them about money, then read this.

Are you pregnant? ๐Ÿคฐ

Are you planning on having your first child? ๐Ÿ‘ถ

Maybe you are planning on having a second child? ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿ‘ถ

For those who are planning children or have young children now, looking at the numbers is the key first step in taking control of your financial future. ๐Ÿ“…

The cost of childcare is definitely something to consider, especially when you start adding up those eye-watering numbers. ๐Ÿ’ธ

๐Ÿ‘ถ"Depending on the area in which you live, childcare costs in the UK are estimated to be between ยฃ150,000 to ยฃ200,000, including food, housing, and childcare" - Moneyfarm

Who knew raising tiny humans could cost so much?! But, at least knowing the approximate costs can help you plan ahead and not have too many surprises when it comes to your finances. ๐Ÿ“ˆ

So, if you're thinking about expanding your family or starting family, just remember to keep those nursery fees in mind!

This THURSDAY at 12 noon, we are hosting a FREE webinar all about "Childcare Costs & Savings". So if you feel like you need to check what the costs are, the government schemes are and how to best save for your children, do sign up for FREE. OR if you just want to make sure you are on top of it all and haven't missed anything, do sign up. There will be time for some Q&A also.

Do you have a "Scarcity Money Mindset"?

Here are some signs that you might do:

โ˜‘๏ธ 1. You don't see the point in saving (even ยฃ10), if you are just going to waste it

โ˜‘๏ธ 2. You don't allow yourself to think about future big goals (i.e. family trip to Disneyland)

โ˜‘๏ธ 3. You avoid any form of risk (i.e. investments)

โ˜‘๏ธ 4. You compare your finances to others ("compare and despair")

โ˜‘๏ธ 5. You are afraid of looking at the bank balance

โ˜‘๏ธ 6. You are afraid of seeing what you are actually spending your money on

โ˜‘๏ธ 7. You say "there is never enough money at the end of each month"

โ˜‘๏ธ 8. You say "I'm crap/rubbish with money"

โ˜‘๏ธ 9. You say "I've tried budgeting before and it never worked, so don't see the point in trying again"

โ˜‘๏ธ 10. You beleive you "can never afford X"

If if you are sitting there thinking "yup, that's me", it can be a challenge and a mental drain having this outlook on your finances.

So many people I've worked with have said so many of the above phrases or admitted they think them.

But the big difference they felt was that it might be worth having an initial free chat to see what is possible, "what's there to lose from a free call?". Find the link to my availability in the link in the comments section.

Here is a great example of how I helped someone with their money mindset.

โ€œMy first conversation put me at ease straight awayโ€ฆits early days but I feel positive about itโ€

This is just one insight into the 600+ money coaching conversations Iโ€™ve had with clients and prospective clients as a Financial Coach.

A common thread is always how most people donโ€™t open up about their thoughts ๐Ÿ’ญ, worries ๐Ÿ˜ซ and aspirations ๐Ÿก around personal finances or even have an opportunity to do so.

However, growing up in a family that suggested talking about money was considered โ€œrudeโ€, Iโ€™m not surprised to find many people who donโ€™t talk about their money to friends and family.

Why is it so important to talk about money?

๐Ÿ˜’ To kick the social stigma attached to it (10% of people would rather talk to their parents about s*x than about their money worries!)

๐Ÿ’ท The cost of living has risen so much recently!

๐Ÿ“ˆ High inflation rates (food inflation was at ~20%)

๐Ÿ“Š Bank of England base rate increases

๐Ÿคฌ To reduce your stress load

Currently there are thousands of people out there, maybe working with you, for you or who you work for that have genuine money concerns. They just might not want to talk to you about it โ€“ no offence!

Then how can we help our employees, our colleagues or anyone else we know?

Could you share your feelings around money?

Would it help to know you could talk to someone? If this sounds good to you, please do reach out for a FREE chat (link in comments) with us at The Parent Money Coach

What book ๐Ÿ“– or podcast ๐Ÿ”Š have you read/listened to that changed your thinking ๐Ÿค” or your perspective?

Add your favourtie book/podcast in the comments....

For me, as a new parent a few years ago I really didn't know much about what was going on with the changes to my sons development, in particular how his brain was growing and developing.

This book gave me such a fascinating insight into how I could adapt my own approach to parenting and it made it easier for me to understand why he behaved in certain ways. It made me understand what I initially perceived to be irrational behaviour and feel more relaxed about how to parent and what to expect as he grew up.

Interesting fact from this book:

โ–ถ๏ธ Did you know a human brain is not fully developed until they are 25!? ๐Ÿง

Makes me now rethink all those questionable decisions in my early 20s. Ha ha.

You are WORSE OFF if you or your partner earn above ยฃ100k?

If one working parent of a child has over ยฃ100k (adjusted net income) you don't qualify for the free childcare hours (and potentially additional funded hours for childcare)

You are now paying more for your childcare.....and furthermore anything above ยฃ100k of earnings also gets hit with the unofficial 60% tax band!

ERGH!

However, you could reduce your taxable income and save ยฃ1000s in tax by:

โœจ Instead of taking a pay rise, take non-cash employee benefits such as a company car ๐Ÿš—, private health insurance๐Ÿฅ etc. through a salary sacrifice scheme

โœจ Increase your pension contributions๐Ÿง“๐Ÿ‘ต

โœจ Donate to charity and claim the Gift Aid tax reliefโ›‘๏ธ

When was the last time you sat down to reflect on what you have achieved?

Since I left teaching in 2020 there are not many times I have sat down to reflect on what I have achieved for myself and for others along the way. So here I go:

๐ŸŒŸI have had 1000+ calls with people supporting them with their finances.

๐ŸŒŸI have supported 15 people specifically on their work / life / family balance.

๐ŸŒŸ I have supported 16 people in moving their careers forward into promotions or job changes

๐ŸŒŸ I have supported 70+ students with Geography GCSE/A Level Tutoring, many of whom have achieved the grades they wanted and places at university.

๐ŸŒŸ I have mentored 6 people through career changes, life events, their business ventures and through the lows of lockdowns.

๐ŸŒŸ I have supported 3 business owners in helping them figure how to work on their businesses and not just in their businesses all the time.

๐ŸŒŸ I have also acted as a consultant to a school nearby on their department needs as their Head of Department was on leave.
...and I have loved every minute of it! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜
