Am I fit enough to train in Krav Maga?
I am asked this question often when potential students/enquiries call me to enquire about our self protection & Fitness classes!
The answer is it doesn’t matter your fitness or experience levels! Our training is designed for our students to develop in their own time from whatever starting point they find themselves at in life.
Let me dive a little further into this as you may find the answer here to unlock your potential, stop wasting precious time sitting on the fence by taking action today. If you are unfit you should train! if you are fit! You should train! If you smoke you should train! If you don’t smoke you should train! If you drink you should train (disclaimer not drinking at the same time though as could be a safety hazard) If you are coming back from injury you should train (in and around the limits of the in injury, with the advisement of a medical professional) basically there is not reason why you shouldn’t train….
So…. you cant do a full push up? No problem!!! Dial it down a notch build the muscles gradually. As an example: Imagine if you just did wall push ups every day starting with 4 sets of 25 twice a day! (Dial it down again if your starting level is less) This would only take you about 5-10 minutes (can you spare 5-10 minutes twice a day?? I’m sure you can) This equates to 200 wall push ups a day!...... Then times this by 7 days!..... You will have achieved 1400 push ups per week! Now imagine you had done this consistently for the past 3 months (90 days) that’s 4200 wall push ups! Imagine how much stronger and toned you would be if you had not sat there thinking about training, and actually did some training…
The point here is putting off training or not joining a class until you are fitter is like trying to be clever before attending school! It makes no sense at all (that quote is from a martial arts expert I cant remember the name but it stuck with me never the less)
I have been teaching self-protection since 2015 and have had the pleasure of working with some amazing people over the years, and the aforementioned question “Am I fit enough” comes up most frequently. In my opinion and experience, it is the single biggest hold up for anyone who is looking for self development physically, mentally, and tactically. I know this personally as have been there myself on my martial arts/sport combat journey! I have trained through various injuries over the years and have developed numerous staged training options working with sports therapists and physios to gradually work back to fitness.
I very much believe it is a strength of character and act of courage to go into a class and train to your own level not focusing on what others think! or what you think they think! Every person who trains is on their own journey so comparing yourself to others or being self conscious is not useful or productive, and will ultimately hold YOU back from achieving your own goals. So the question is this! Can you muster the courage to start today! Can you spare 5-10 minutes right now to bust out some wall push ups?
A relative question I am asked frequently is am I too old! The answer is no you are never too old, apply the above and you will find your answer! Train to your own level! It is your personal journey. I hope you have found some motivation in this, and thank you for taking the time to read our post!
