As we approach the new season, I thought I would post an update for members and non-members alike.

Firstly, the bad news - for the first time in five years we felt that the membership fees should increase for the coming year. However, the club now has an extra session all year round on Saturday mornings.

Weekly club sessions:
Monday 10am to 11am (1st April 2025 to 31st March 2026)

Tuesday 6pm to 8pm - Club Night (1st April to 30th September)

Once a month on a Friday from 5pm to 7pm - Club Round-Robin (April to September)

Saturday 11am to noon (1st April 2025 to 31st March 2026)

Once a month on a Saturday from 11am to 1pm - Club Round-Robin (October to March)

Sessions will not take place on 22nd December, 27th December or 29th December 2025

Dates for the diary:
Christmas Meal - 5th December 2025 at the Horse and Groom.

Important Reminders
Don't forget that membership of the club entitles you to book courts outside club hours for £3 per court per hour. That's a 50% discount on the normal price. If you play in Mortimer regularly and are not members, it would be worth considering joining the club.

If you are a member and not already on the Club What's App group, please speak to Simon, Val or Lorna so that your name can be added.

Welcome to two new members who have just joined - Asanka and Lel Wijeratne. We hope to welcome a few more as the season progresses.

The club held its Spring picnic and tournament yesterday afternoon in brilliant weather, the first picnic for a very long time due to Covid19 and poor weather. Ten players took part in the round robin tournament, splendidly organised by Jean Thomas, our club secretary. The Ladies prize was shared by Carol Huddleston and Jane Startford while Simon Orr just pipped Andy Buswell for the Men's prize. Thanks to Val Brown for scoring the tournament and to all who turned up to make the afternoon such a success.

The Mortimer Mixed Team have been in action twice in the last week.
Firstly, away to Odiham B on Wednesday evening when we gained a 5:3 win. Well done to Kyle and Gillian Butler on a clean sweep and to Antonia Durrant and Nick Simmonds who managed to get the single set needed for a win.
On Sunday, in cold but sunny conditions, we were overwhelmed by a strong Stratton Park B team losing 8:0. Kyle with Gillian and Jean Thomas with Simon Orr enjoyed the tennis if not the result!
Well played all.

The Men's team had a match against Whitchurch A team on Sunday morning at home. Unfortunately, (or perhaps fortunately), Whitchurch could only field a pair so we started the match 4-0 up. But what a pair! We only managed to win two games in the 4 sets played so we were lucky to come away with a point. Well tried, Alex Russell playing with Andy Buswell and Steve Tickle playing with Andy Brown.

30/07/2021

The Men's team were in action again on 25th July at home against Oakley B. We lost the match 7-1 with Steve Tickle and Nick Simmonds going down 6-4 6-3 and 6-1 6-1 while Alex Russell and Andy Buswell lost the first match 6-0 6-3 and then drew the second one 3-6 6-4.

The decisive pair were a well matched Oakley B pair who normally play for Oakley A and swept all before them.

It's being a tough season for our teams but at least some tennis is being enjoyed!

07/07/2021

The pic nic is still planned for 1PM ON SUNDAY 11TH JULY I know I know, we picked a bad day but we can play tennis and then watch the mens' final no problem.

15/06/2021

On Sunday 13th, the Men's team suffered another defeat, this time against Totally Tennis B. The opposition comprised two very able youngsters (half our team's age) and also one very canny Spaniard and one very powerful Romanian. Steve Tickle and Nick Simmonds got to 5-5 in the first set against the European duo, but then lost 7-5 and 6-1. They were outclassed by the youngsters 6-1, 6-2. Alex Russell played well in his first outing for the Men's team. Unfortunately, he and Andy Buswell lost their sets 6-2, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-2.

The most important thing was that the team had great fun in the heat even at the expense of many sweat-soaked tee shirts!

05/06/2021

Thanks to Gillian, Kyle, Jean and Brian for playing against Whitchurch A this morning. Although Mortimer lost 6 sets to 2, it was great fun and look forward to a return match, especially with the promise of wine after.
