Drill list πŸ‘‡

Rolls ups - basically just the recovery phase, start from the finish with the boat still and roll up to the front, placing the blades just as you arrive. Looking for that good timing between the blades and the seat.

Single arm roll ups - as above but just with one arm, gives a little more stability. In a sweep boat this could be outside arm only.

Bungee - rowing with some added resistance to the shell, helps to feel when the blades are connected which therefore means when the blades have entered at the right point

Air strokes - rowing without the blades in the water, helps to simplify the drive into one accelerated push

Stand throughs - driving up off the seat and staying off until you take the blades out. Aim to do this 1cm above the seat and not trying to stand straight up

Legs only / straight arm rowing - helps to isolate the leg and hip connection without breaking the arms

Feet out - pretty self explanatory. Forces you to feel the correct timing of the release of the blades.

Half arms - finish when the arms are halfway to the body / elbow angle is about 90 degrees. Stops you from pulling through too far

Short slide bursts - gives you less time to think about the finish and therefore encourages a clean / loose release.

Give them a try!

Can you take the catch with bent arms? Yes, but the context and the details are important to understand.

Does chasing a number actually make you faster? I pulled every verified Concept 2 2k score from the last five seasons to find out.

Scores cluster hard in the final few seconds before a barrier (6:00, 6:30, 7:00…) and then drop off just as hard right after.

I used to think it would be the other way around, if I'm honest.

Swipe through for the full breakdown πŸ‘‰

What do you think about these results? I'm happy to post the full breakdown of every barrier from 5:40 to 10:00 in another post if people are interested in the details.

A seriously fast week on the water, even with some changeable winds.

TEN medal winning crews went under world best times, including two entire podiums (women's four and men's eight)

The race of the regatta for me was the men's eight, being decided by just 0.06 seconds.

However they weren't relatively the fastest crews compared to the records that stood coming into the A finals πŸ‘€ swipe across to see who was.

Which number surprised you the most? πŸ€”

If you're trying to rate high and maintain control of the handles and therefore the blades, rolling into your fingertips is not the way ❌

If you row just to make it look how you want it to and not worry about boat speed, then this probably doesn't apply to you.

If you want to make boats go fast, then you'd do well to put the idea of flat wrists as far out of your mind as possible.

Improving key rowing metrics by over 10% doesn't happen very often.

But it's more likely when you know exactly what to work on and then what to do to achieve the desired change.

For me coaching is about combining the art with the science, the data guides the targets but at the end of the day you've still got to get a human being to make the change and that's where the years of experience helps alongside the number on the screen.

I had a breakthrough last week with an athlete I was working with - she had been told 60% of the stroke was legs, so had taken that to mean that the trunk should take over before the legs were finished.

I've heard it plenty of times before as well.

What was cool was how much the whole stroke improved once we worked on the second half of the leg drive - fully extending the knees and the quads and driving the seat to a standstill.

So, if you've heard the 60/30/10 breakdown before (or some combination close to that) - just make sure that doesn't dictate how you actually complete the drive phase.
