Parents’ question…

05/06/2026

⚽🏀🏉🏐 “Isn’t it unsafe for children to lift weights?”

It’s one of the most common questions parents ask.

But here’s the reality:

Young athletes are already exposed to substantial forces every time they run, jump, land, decelerate, and change direction during sport.

Strength and conditioning doesn’t create those forces.

It helps young people develop the movement skills, coordination, strength, and resilience needed to cope with them.

Done appropriately, youth strength training is about preparation, not powerlifting.

It’s about helping young athletes move better, perform better, and stay healthier throughout their sporting journey.

🛡️ Does your son or daughter seem to be constantly picking up niggles and injuries?

While injuries can never be prevented completely, appropriate strength and conditioning can help young athletes become more robust, move more efficiently, and better tolerate the demands of sport.

Think of it as body armour for sport.

✅ Stronger bodies
✅ Better movement
✅ Fewer injuries
✅ Confidence on and off the field

The goal isn’t simply to improve performance.

The goal is to keep young athletes healthy, active, and doing the sports they love for longer.

Can just 6 weeks of training reduce ACL injury risk factors in adolescent girls? 🤔

A study of youth female basketball players found that a short neuromuscular training programme improved movement patterns associated with ACL injury risk.

Why does that matter?

Because ACL injuries are often associated with poor landing mechanics, reduced movement control, and the inability to effectively absorb and redirect force during sport.

The good news? These movement qualities can be developed.

That’s why strength and conditioning for young athletes isn’t just about getting stronger or faster. It’s about helping them move more effectively, perform with confidence, and build resilience for sport.

✅ Better movement
✅ Better performance
✅ Lower injury risk

If your son or daughter participates in sports that involve jumping, landing, sprinting, and changing direction, strength and conditioning should be part of their development.

From grassroots sport to professional and international performance environments, strength and conditioning has taken me...

From grassroots sport to professional and international performance environments, strength and conditioning has taken me on a journey I could never have imagined.

I’ve been fortunate to work with talented athletes, coaches, and support staff across a range of sports and settings, including major international competitions.

But today, my greatest passion is helping children and teenagers develop, progress, and fulfil their potential through sport and physical activity.

That’s why I created MatchFit Movement.

Every child deserves access to high-quality coaching that helps them move better, become stronger, build confidence, and develop a lifelong positive relationship with physical activity.

The goal isn’t simply creating better athletes.

It’s helping young people become healthier, more capable, and more confident versions of themselves.

🤔 “Is it too late for my daughter to start strength and conditioning?”

This was a question I was asked recently by a parent at a local rugby club.

The answer? Absolutely not. 💪

While introducing movement skills and strength training earlier in childhood can provide advantages, the opportunity is never lost. The key is starting in the right place.

For some athletes, that means developing movement competency first:
✅ Learning how to move efficiently
✅ Developing control and coordination
✅ Building confidence in fundamental movement skills

From there, strength, power, speed, and athletic performance can all be developed progressively. 📈

It’s never about doing what everyone else is doing. It’s about meeting the athlete where they are and helping them move forward safely and effectively.

Girls’ athletic development should be a journey 📈

Not skipping straight to adult-style training… and not relying on sport alone.

At MatchFit Movement, we develop the foundations first ✅
🏃‍♀️ Movement skills
⚖️ Coordination & balance
💥 Landing & deceleration mechanics
🏋️‍♀️ Strength & power
🧠 Confidence & physical literacy

Then, as girls mature and gain experience, training becomes progressively more structured to support performance in sport and help reduce injury risk factors.

No fads. No fiction. Just research-driven coaching.

Do you think sport alone develops everything children need physically?

Sport develops skills. Physical training develops the engine behind them.

Children shouldn’t just play sport — they should also learn how to move well, cope with force, sprint, land, and change direction effectively.

That’s how we build healthier, more resilient, and more athletic young people for the long term.
