On Sunday 20th September, we’re throwing open the gates at Spencer Square Tennis Courts for our Heritage Open Day – and everyone is invited.

Spencer Square has been part of Ramsgate for generations, and we want to see the courts absolutely buzzing with local people.

We’ve got a brilliant afternoon planned:

🏆 12:00–2:00pm | THE SPENCER GORE FAMILY CUP

We kick things off with something brand new!

8 child and parent combinations will take to the courts and battle it out to become the first ever winners of the Spencer Gore Family Cup.

The competition is named after Spencer Gore, the first ever Wimbledon Men’s Singles Champion, who is buried in Ramsgate
Cemetery and it promises to be a fantastic way to start the afternoon.

Who will be the first family to lift the cup? 🏆

🎾 2:00–3:00pm | FREE TENNIS & PICKLEBALL

Then it’s your turn to get on court!

Come and try tennis or pickleball completely FREE.

Our coaches will be running fun coaching tasters, or you can simply grab a racket and have a play.

Children, adults, complete beginners, people who haven’t played for years – everyone is welcome.

No racket? We’ve got you covered.

Never played before? Even better. Come and have a go!

Then we finish the afternoon with some seriously good tennis.

Ewan returns to Spencer Square to take on our current champion, Coach Jack, in what should be an incredible exhibition match.

If you’ve never watched tennis of this standard from just a few metres away, you’re in for a treat.

Grab a drink from Vincents Coffee Shed, find yourself a good spot and enjoy the match. 🎾

☕ AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO PLAY TENNIS TO COME ALONG!

Pop down for half an hour, stay for the whole afternoon, bring the children, meet some friends, grab something from Vincents Coffee Shed and enjoy one of Ramsgate’s historic sporting spaces.

It’s free. It’s local. And everyone is invited.

Our free annual Heritage Open Day at Spencer Square is happening on the 20th September from 12noon to 4pm.

🎾 Our first ever Spencer Gore Family Cup featuring parent and child combos.
🎾 Our exhibition match between Jack and a special guest. Will Jack keep his crown 👑
🎾 Free Coaching Activities and Free Play Opportunities
🎾 A raffle for Friends of Spencer Square and art installation.
🎾 Vincents Coffee Shack will be open for delicious food, cake and more.

Before the tennis started this morning, there was already plenty of action around the courts!

A huge thank you to the brilliant volunteers from Friends of Spencer Square (FOSS) who spent the morning weeding and tidying around the courts while we were busy introducing local children to tennis.

It's a great reminder that when local people, community groups, councillors and organisations all pull in the same direction, amazing things can happen.

Over the past few years we've built some fantastic partnerships here at Spencer Square, and together we've transformed what this space offers local residents.

Whether it's volunteers making the gardens look beautiful, coaches helping children enjoy tennis, or local councillors supporting community projects, every contribution matters.

Community isn't built by one person or one organisation. It's built by people who care enough to get involved.

Congratulations to Yianni who won our Grade 5 Under 8’s Tournament at Spencer Square today 🏆

15 kids from Sutton, Canterbury, Gillingham, Faversham, Broadstairs and Margate with wonderful supportive parents having fun in the sun.

No tears, no tantrums just good old fashioned encouragement and happy vibes.

Next Gen Picklers (Ages 12yrs to 16yrs)

A big thank you to everyone who joined Coach Sheena to give Pickleball a try during Active Ramsgate Week.

Participants learned the basics, enjoyed some friendly games, and discovered why this fast-growing sport is proving so popular.

We were delighted to provide the courts free of charge in support of Active Ramsgate Week and Ramsgate Town Council's efforts to help local people get more active.

The good news is that Pickleball is here to stay!
