Yesterday I was invited to do an Equine Sports Massage demo at HAPPA - Horse & Pony Protection Association. I very much enjoyed my day and hope everyone who watched found it helpful and enjoyable. I would like to thank happa for the invite and hope the festival of horse day raised many vital funds for the excellent work you do.
A fantastic day out for all the family watch for the date next year !

George enjoying his regular massage. Now 4 years old and ready to start his novice year under saddle. regular massage helps to keep his muscle supple and tension free and supports him being able to perform to his best ability. Good luck with the show season ahead.

Very much enjoyed this month CPD a very interesting topic. Based around the TMJ.

Did you know the TMJ is a joint in the horses head. It is located on the side of the skull roughly half way between the eye and the ear.

Fascinating though this joint is not only an influence in the horses chewing and jaw movement but through the horses structures all being interlinked it has a role in effecting head, neck and shoulder movement , fore limb movement and posture and balance.

One of the reasons that when we treat a horse with sports massage we treat the whole horse. The horses whole body is all connected and treating one area can often have an influence in many other areas of the horse.

Cpd completed this time on equine stretching.

Different stretching techniques may be used during your horses massage session and some may be advised and owners shown how to do correctly for in-between visit. One big thing to remember never stretch a cold muscle !

Please remember though not all horses are suited to every stretch. I taylor each session to the individual horse depending on many different factors for example : work load, areas of tension, age, any health conditions ect..

Adapting techniques to suit the horse/pony is so important.
During Pip’s regular sessions, I constantly need to read her behaviour and adapt techniques depending on what she is happy with on the day. She can be quite reactive and keeps me on my toes when it comes to treating her. As you can see, we achieved the desired results today and this girl couldn’t be more relaxed and content by the end of her treatment.
