Fairy Cave Quarry

Fairy Cave Quarry Fairy Cave Quarry is a disused limestone quarry, reverting to nature; it is popular with cavers and climbers.

The Fairy Cave Quarry Management Committee look after general bits and bobs at the quarry, under the supervision of the landowner. FCQMC are happy for members of the BMC to help with keeping an eye on the quarry and share in the quiet enjoyment of this once industrial site now rapidly reverting to nature and becoming something of a wilderness park.

From 1st May 2022 the combination lock has been reprogrammed with a new different number; members of the caving and climbing communities can find out the new combination from their respective access officers (BMC for climbers and CSCC for cavers). Access conditions only extend to these two recreational user group types. Other visits are disallowed and could jeopardise the terms of the current arrangements. If you witness people on site who are neither climbing nor caving kindly PM this page. Many thanks.

Spring is close, and it looks like by summer the quarry will be vibrant with colours. Must revisit when it is!

The quarry is reopen for climbing from Friday 5th June.
A few points to note if you decide to go climbing in the quarry.
Be prepared to change your plans if you find it too busy to maintain social distancing.
It is recommended that you use a hand sanitiser before and after handling padlocks and gates.
It is important to minimise risks as much as possible, therefore climb routes within your capability and avoid routes which are obviously loose. Unfortunately many of the easier routes in the quarry have loose rock and are not ideal for beginners or inexperienced trad climbers.
Ash dieback is affecting trees throughout the Mendip area including in and around the quarry and car park. This can seriously impact on the strength and reliability of even large trees. Wherever possible back up Ash trees used as belays and runners.
An inspection of the ash trees will be carried out in the near future inc those used for belays and runners.
