Glenburn MWFC vs Irvine Meadow
The Oval 10:30am KO
A fine sunny 😎 morning at St Ninians Park, better known as The Oval, with a south westerly wind gently blowing the corner flags as both teams took to the pitch, which looked to be in great condition for this encounter ✔️
Glenburn started on the front foot straight from kick with two blistering attacks down the left wing within the first 56 seconds of the match, both chances created as the ball was squared by Declan Carlyle across the face of the goal but there were no takers.
4 mins into the match and Irvine Meadow took the lead very much against run of play after a lapse in concentration at the back between two Glenburn defenders who failed to challenge for the ball and allowed the big Irvine Meadow striker to get onto it at the edge of the D ⚽️ and he lobbed an effort over the top of Lucas Stirling who had no chance, and he let his defenders know it!
One minute later however that boy Declan Carlyle storms down the left wing again as he crosses the ball the full width of the Medda box where Lewis Taylor is on hand about 10 yards out to fire the ball past the keeper ⚽️ making it 1-1
On 19 minutes Medda attack the Glenburn box and as the ball is cleared it hits an Irvine Meadow player's hand at the edge of our box, this action stalls the clearance and should have been a free kick to The Miners - however it's unclear whether the referee never saw it or played an advantage to Glenburn when there was none, but the ball was played back into the box and turned wide for a corner by Harry Templeton.
The resultant corner kick, which was wind assisted by the 13mph south westerly wind, was met by the head of a tall Medda player who headed strongly in just under the bar ⚽️ making the score 1-2 in favour of Medda & The Miners can feel well aggrieved about that one.
23 minutes and its disaster for Glenburn who looked to have been playing the best football from back to front, but were out done by a long ball forward through the central midfield area and the Medda striker, who may or may not have been offside, did well to control the ball and finish ⚽️ past the advancing Lucas Stirling.
We didn't need to wait long for an inspired Glenburn comeback though as on 25 minutes Robbie Douglas clears the ball well up field & Rory Wilson gets it under control and feeds Declan Carlyle on the left wing and he crosses for Alex Craig in the centre to slot home ⚽️ reducing the deficit. 2-3 and its game on.
On 28 minutes the equaliser arrives as Glenburn have a corner taken by Sam McPherson, Robbie Douglas makes contact with the ball trying to get a shot on goal from 10 yards & his effort is partially cleared to the edge of the box where Fletcher McLurkin is waiting and he drills a well-controlled shot low in to the keeper's bottom right corner ⚽️ making it the score 3-3 in an enthralling match.
The first half comeback is completed on 32 minutes when Declan Carlyle attacks down the left wing again to the edge of the box and crosses inside towards the penalty spot where Zac Aiton steps over the ball allowing it to run through to Alex Craig and he knocks home at the back post to score his second goal of the match ⚽️ putting The Miners ahead four goals to three.
Enter the second half and on 39 minutes a long kick out from Lucas Stirling is latched onto by Zac Aiton and he takes a stride forward before sending a shot just wide from distance.
Glenburn continue in the ascendancy through the early part of the second half but find themselves conceding another goal against the run of play on 49 minutes as Irvine Meadow find themselves with 2 versus 2 inside our box and their strikers combine well to give each other an opportunity for a shot on goal the second of which finds its way into the back of the Glenburn net ⚽️ making the score 4-4
Both teams are going for it now and it's end to end stuff in the final 20 minutes of the match. Glenburn get the breakthrough though on 62 minutes when another long ball through the middle is knocked on by Rory Wilson's header towards Zac Aiton breaking forward on the left-hand side of the pitch, staying just onside & able to latch on to the ball.
As the Irvine Meadow keeper advances well off his line, Zac tries a shot from distance which the Medda keeper manages to get some fingertips on but unfortunately for him and pleasingly for The Miners the ball still has enough pace to slowly cross over the goal line ⚽️ putting The Miners 5-4 in front with eight minutes to play.
Those eight minutes are usually pretty nervy affairs in such circumstances but the young Miners did well to contain the Irvine Meadow threat and almost made it 6 right at the death when Rory Wilson found the ball breaking to him after a Medda attack broke down and with all their men pushing forward Rory found himself just inside the Medda half with only the keeper to beat, who was playing sweeper keeper in a central midfield position. Rory tried a shot from over 45 yards which looked like it had the legs and direction to hit the target but just trundled off the post and the danger was cleared before the referee blew the whistle indicating full time.
What a game between the teams that finished first & second in the league last season doing battle once again in a thoroughly entertaining match, although it has to be said Glenburn made it difficult for themselves at a couple of the goals but well-done boys and it was then onto the main event - The GMWFC Race Night at the Miners Club in Prestwick.🐴🐎🐎🐎🐎🐴

A tough decision this week with so many of the team putting in a first class display. But the choice again goes to Alex Craig with two important first half goals ⚽️ His movement in the box for both goals was top drawer ✅
