End of season report.
Wow what a year it has been for women's cricket in Prestwick! 🥰 We are delighted to have finished 3rd in the Women's Premier League having played against some lovely teams and talented players. The women and girls work so hard all year round and it is down to their hard work and commitment that we find our team thriving. Well done team 👏💪
We started our team in July 2023 with a couple of juniors and innocent bystanders (mums and sisters). After advertising for new players we were lucky that several women, most of whom had never picked up a bat before, decided to give it a try and they are still here three years later, going strong!
We were also delighted to welcome our Vicey, Debs, who plays for both us and Ayr, and was a big help in guiding the team alongside our Captain Holly. At this point we had a wide range of players from the age of 11 to 55 and it was incredible to see how everyone just came together and supported each other.
We started out in softball, enoying the benefits of the Wee Bash over the 23/24 season and then quickly moved into Challenger League 24/25 where the skills and confidence of all our players soared. We now had a team, so at the end of 2025 we made the decion to go into WPL30 for 2026 - amazing considering 8 or 9 players had only started playing any type of cricket in the last 3 years! As the only women's team in Ayrshire we attracted 2 new players who had not been able to access WPL opportunities within their own club and so our team grew further and what a season we've had 💪.
It has been a long journey that we have all enjoyed together. Our players get stronger every year, gaining confidence and skills and reaping all of the benefits that playing for a Women’s team brings. Our juniors also play in mixed junior leagues and there are often opportunities for our more confident players to play senior mixed 2XI. We are extremely proud that 4 of our girls have also had opportunities in Warriors, Regional and Scotland ( well done Freya, Sophie, Hadassah and Millie!)
Going forward into 2027 we look forward to stepping up again into WPL40. This will be our biggest challenge yet and I have no doubt the women will take all of these challenges in their stride and support each other throughout.
People often ask me about retention and it's an issue in women's cricket for sure. We all enjoy our cricket and every single member works very hard. However its not just about that, we also believe strongly in socialising together, we meet up a lot, have a lot of laughs, try new things together and generally support each other in any way we can. I couldnt be prouder to be part of such a wonderful group of women. Perhaps its true that teams who grow together and socialise together - stay together 🤗
We also held Dynamos this year and welcomed 12 new young players under 12. A future team for sure and so very promising for the furture of girls cricket.
