Prestwich Diamonds 2 Vs Moorside Rangers 1 (U12 Girls)
What a game of football this morning from both sides, a fast paced, physical and nervy affair, with so much riding on the game for both teams.
The diamonds were clueless that a win would mean promotion. We didn’t tell them as we didn’t want them to feel any pressure, but they still really stepped up their performance up today. All we asked was that they matched the physicality we knew was coming, and that they tried their best.
From kick off the game was played at a hundred miles an hour and it didn’t let up until the final whistle. Moorside were on top for the opening ten minutes, and looked really dangerous down the left hand side especially with their tricky left footed player. They had a few shots that went just over the bar and looked the most likely to open the scoring.
The diamonds began to grow into the game, and we used our pace well to attack. We saw some really strong link up play up front today, Alice especially had an incredible game playing some great balls.
Eventually the Diamonds opened the scoring, a corner sent in by Cienna eventually fell to Alice’s feet to poke it into the net.
A few minutes later it was the same combination that got us our second, this time with Cienna breaking down the wing and playing a great through ball to Alice who calmly finished. We had a few more chances in this half but Moorside were resolutely defending, and they had a similar number of chances of their own.
Half time team talk was to stay calm, keep doing what we were doing, but that Moorside were going to come out strong and we needed to match them. The second half was a brilliant advert for girl’s football, both teams playing at such a high level.
The second half was similar to the first, we had some great chances that we couldn’t convert and Moorside were the same.
Teagan stepped up to be in net today and we thought she was brilliant, her kicking in particular was flawless all game long.
Gracie had to play deeper than usual and Eva filled in her spot, and they did a great job both going forward and in defence. Cienna had a very tough game against a quick strong defender, but she looked really dangerous when she got past her. Elsa and Mollie battled hard out on the left, with Alice linking everything together neatly.
There was lots of defending to do today, and they did so brilliantly. Audrey and Iyla had some very difficult wingers to deal with, and Hella in the middle had a spectacular performance against a very strong striker.
With 15 minutes to go we switched off temporarily, and a long throw into the box was pounced on by their player who shot into the roof of the net. The girls all had to defend doggedly in the closing minutes, with each one of them playing their part. It was a very tense ending but the girls managed to hold on to their narrow lead.
A draw would’ve probably been the fairest result, it was the most even game we’ve played all season, but the girls deserved the win for their effort and determination. Coming away with all three points means at minimum we will finish second this season and are promoted, but with two games to go the title is still in the girls hands.
Big shout out to Moorside for playing their part in such a great game. They’re a nice team to play against, lovely players and coaches, and have been our closest competitors this season.

Teagan - A real team player today having to reluctantly play in net for the full game, and we thought she was brilliant. Made some good saves but her kicking out of her hands was flawless and set up some great attacks for us, nearly getting herself an assist. Well done Teagan!
Alice - A monster performance from Alice today, she was relentless all game long. Her link up play was excellent, she had some great chances scoring both our goals, and she seemed even quicker than she already is. A true all-round striker’s performance!
