THEY’VE DONE IT!

THE U11 GIRLS HAVE FINISHED THE SEASON UNBEATEN AND WRAPPED UP THE LEAGUE TITLE!

Mon 22nd June — Girls v Kirkham & Wesham

After a nail-biting final game against an excellent Kirkham side, the girls caught and fielded brilliantly to seal victory and complete an invincible season as league champions. 🥳

What an incredible effort from a team that only formed last year to win the U11s girls' softball title. To put it in context, this win — and most of the season — was achieved with just one actual U11 in the side, the rest made up of two U10s, one U9 and six U8s! A remarkable achievement and a real testament to the hard work everyone has put in, especially the girls themselves. 👏

The game itself was tight. Early wickets put WLD on the back foot, and although Erin, Jessica, Eliza P, Eliza C, Chloe and Aurelia all made good contributions, Kirkham's full, accurate bowling made boundaries hard to come by. With a target of 100-6, the chase looked well within reach for their much older team.

But the bowling — and especially the fielding — saved WLD, who kept their best display of the season until the last Game. Alongside great boundary stops from Harri, Poppy and Chloe, joint Player of the Match Ellie took excellent catches, while captain Riya set the standard with two catches and two sharp run outs. A quick-thinking stumping from Aurelia and a direct hit from joint Player of the Match Eliza P meant nine wickets fell in total. Kirkham finished on 96-9, handing this young, fearless WLD side victory by a net 19 runs.

Well done, girls — a brilliant achievement, and proof of what you can do when the opportunity to play is there. 🏏👏

U11s NO MATCH FOR STRONG PENWORTHAM SIDE

Fri 19th June - u11s v Penwortham.

Walton-le-Dale bowled and fielded well against penwortham but the batting again didn't fire to leave the team well short of Penwortham's total. Bowling was accurate and economical, with the excellent Jimmy picking up 2 wickets, Billy and Aim one apiece and a runout leaving Penwortham 130-5.

Unfortunately, the batting couldn't keep out some fast, accurate bowling and run scoring was difficult. Despite a couple of boundaries for Jayden and one for Jimmy, Eli, Ethan and Billy, wickets fell regularly and WLD finished well back. Aim picked up POTM for his wicket and some lovely shots during his innings.

U11s COME OUT THE WRONG SIDE OF A WICKET FEST AT VERNON CARUS

Weds 17th June - U11s v Vernon Carus.

Walton-le-Dale's young team learnt some valuable lessons about playing across the line as wickets tumbled at Vernon Carus. There were three making hardball debuts and all contributing with runs and a wicket. Batting first, one such debutant, Tom, made great use of the short boundary to smash 19 including 3 x 4s and a 6! Arya also hit 13 in his farewell performance before relocation down south. However, 11 wickets was costly to give away, finishing on 96-11.

Wickets were needed and they came, with 2 for Aim, 1 for POTM Billy, Poppy and hardball debutants Tom, Chloe and Isaac, along with a few runouts. Ultimately vernons finished on 122-10 to take the win but invaluable experience gained by the young Dale team against an experienced opposition.

U13s HIGHEST SCORE OF THE SEASON, NOT ENOUGH TO BEAT PRESTON

Mon 15th June - u13s v Preston.

The u13s produced their highest score of the season and fielded well against Preston, but it wasn't enough to avoid defeat. Bowling first, WLD were far better in the field than the reverse fixture but again could not contain the elegant Preston opener from reaching his 30* retirement. Bowling was tight, with POTM Teddy only going for 2 runs in his two overs. The rewards started to come with wickets a piece for Jayden, James J, Dev, Jim, Jimmy and Ethan, the later two both taking excellent catches off their own bowling.

After a couple of early wickets, Ethan and Dev produced a superb partnership of classy cricket shots, eventually both being run out for 23 and 24 respectively. Despite boundaries for Jim, James J, Jayden and a first for Eli, WLD finished on 87-8, 42 short of Preston. Unfortunately, that was Dev's last game before his family relocate down south. That will be a big loss to the team but we wish him well for the future.
