🔧 What Goes Into Bench Adjusting a Saddle 🔧

Ever wondered what actually happens when your saddle goes off to be adjusted? Here's a look behind the scenes at the process, for saddles with an adjustable tree.

1️⃣ Measure and template the horse. Before anything else, we take proper measurements to know exactly what shape we're adjusting towards.

2️⃣ Level the workspace. The bench needs to be completely level so the saddle adjusts evenly on both sides, not just one.

3️⃣ Into the bench press. The saddle goes into the press and is widened or narrowed depending on what the fitter needs to achieve.

4️⃣ Leave it to set. The saddle is left for a few minutes so the adjustment settles properly before moving on.

5️⃣ Measure again. We check the saddle a second time to confirm it's adjusted exactly right.

6️⃣ Try it on the horse. The final step, checking the fit in person and making sure everyone's happy with the result.

🎓 This isn't something to attempt at home. It should always be carried out by a fully trained and qualified saddle fitter, so the adjustment is accurate and the saddle stays structurally sound.

🔎 How to Spot Uneven Wear Across Your Saddle's Panels 🔎

Ever wondered what your fitter is actually checking when they turn your saddle upside down? Here's a quick walkthrough of exactly that.

1️⃣ Turn it over. The first thing we do is flip the saddle so we can properly see the underside of the panels

2️⃣ Check the nail heads. These should look similar on both sides. If one side looks different to the other, that's often your first clue something's off

3️⃣ Use the centre seam as your guide. Lining up against the middle helps you spot if things aren't sitting straight

4️⃣ Look at the gullet and panels. Sometimes the panels have shifted over, or they've been flocked in at a different angle on one side compared to the other

🐴 More often than not, uneven wear like this comes down to how your horse moves. If they naturally motor through more on one side, that side of the panel takes more pressure over time. Rider position can play a part too, so it's rarely just one single cause!

Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes before your fitter turns up with a van full of saddles? Here's how we make sure they're bringing the right ones:

📋 Step 1: We gather the details. Before anything else, we get your fitter all the key info: your horse's name, age, breed, height and workload. We'll also ask about the saddle they're currently in, if they have one, and whether it's actually working for them.

🎯 Step 2: We find out what you're after. As the customer, we'll ask what kind of saddle you're looking for and what budget you're working with. Sticking to budget matters, it helps us bring options that are realistic rather than saddles you'll never buy!

📅 Step 3: We book you in. Once we've got the full picture, your fitting gets booked.

📸 Step 4: Pictures before the day. Your fitter will ask for a few photos of your horse beforehand to get a feel for their shape ahead of time.

🐴 Step 5: They bring the right stock. Drawing on their training and experience, your fitter uses all of this to select saddles from stock that genuinely suit your horse's shape and your needs, rather than just turning up with whatever's closest to hand.

🔧 Full Reflock vs Quick Adjustment: What's the Difference? 🔧

We get asked this a lot, so in this week's video Sarah breaks down exactly when your saddle needs a full reflock and when a quick adjustment will do the job.

✅ Quick adjustment (top up): This is a smaller job where a little fresh wool is added into specific areas of the panel to even things out or fine tune the fit. It's great for minor tweaks on a saddle that's still in good overall condition.

🔁 Full reflock: This is the bigger job. All the old, compacted flocking is stripped right out and the panel is rebuilt from scratch with fresh wool. It's what's needed if your saddle is getting on a bit, you're still seeing lumps or unevenness even after a top up, or it's been a good few years since it was last done.

🐴 The panel is what sits between you and your horse's back, so keeping it even and supportive matters for both your comfort and theirs.

👉 The takeaway: a quick adjustment fine tunes what's already working, a full reflock rebuilds it when the flocking's had its day.

🐴 Saddle Fit Check with Hayden, Joey and Guy 🐴

Our brand ambassador Hayden had her two boys, Joey and Guy, in for a fitting check, and both came through with flying colours!

🔧 A quick gullet change for each got them both dialled in perfectly for how they're working right now.

💪 Joey's shims came out too. He's been building some lovely muscle lately, so his saddle needed a little less padding to make room for his new shape. A great reminder that as your horse changes, your saddle needs to keep up.

🎥 We also talked storage in the video: keeping your saddle on a metal rack can dent the flocking over time and undo all that careful fitting. A padded or pole-style rack is much kinder to your panels.

👉 The takeaway: regular fit checks and the right storage go hand in hand when it comes to protecting your saddle and your horse's comfort.
