In addition to the obvious advice that paddocks on lighter soils should be grazed first, pastures older than three years have much better turf structure than younger re-seeds, which gives them more poaching resistance. So, even though there maybe greater covers on the younger swards, hold off grazing until later if you can.

Hurricane III - Spring Sown and High Yield?

Hurricane II is about to get better. This 18-month mixture was originally designed around a surprisingly persistent Westerwold Ryegrass. In NIAB trials it out-yielded the control Italian Ryegrass by +6 T silage/acre. Hurricane III is based on a new Belgian Westerwold which has higher yield, more persistence and is ready for cutting one week earlier - from a spring sowing. The seed does not arrive from New Zealand until April, so it will not be available for early sowings.

Thinking about growing fodder beet this year? Lactimo produces very high yields of medium dry matter yellow/orange roots. It has good seedling vigour and strong foliar growth producing very big tops with good disease resistance. Roots have low dirt tare, ideally harvested by machine but can also be hand lifted. The low dry matter and high % of root above ground and large tops make Lactimo suitable grazing in situ.
