A great day at the Global Kapap Association Summer Camp a few weeks ago

I spent the day teaching instructors and their students knife defence. I really enjoy teaching knife defence as it always causes a bit of controversy and gets people asking questions and really thinking.

Many martial arts instructors argue that you should not be teaching students how to fight against a knife and the only valid option is to run away. I find this a a very narrow minded view.

Should your first instinct be to run ???

100% it should but what do you do if you can't???

There are a number of reasons that may stop you from turning and getting on your toes, it doesn't matter the reason the fact is you can't so you need to have a viable plan B!!!

Hence why I believe you have to teach students how to deal with a knife threat or knife attack, if you don't your leaving them defenceless and there are holes in your self defence system

A common practise in Krav maga and kapap schools is to teach there students to become the most violent and aggressive they can be if the situation calls for it.

The issue I have is they negate technique for uncontrolled aggression and you often see the students just windmilling punches towards the attacker with no control, no technique and more often than not head hunting with every strike.

In real life this will put their student in such a compromised position, they will compromise balance, situational awareness and efficiency.

All fights and violent confrontations start on the feet or in a vertical position and 100% of them will involve striking, so why not teach your students to be effective strikers all the while adopting the fundamentals of self defence, forward momentum, continuous controlled aggression, situational awareness and efficiency

We like to train in the muay thai methodology of striking because it allows us to train so we can utilise all of our weapons, hands elbows knees and kicks, it also allows us to practise defence aswell as offense

This is a video of a knife attack in Liverpool last week!!!!

Firstly anybody that carries a knife is a coward and deserves the full weight of the law to come down on them, if you ho out qith a knife your intentions are very clear you intend to use it for harm.

Now if you look at the video there are alot of people in a small area and the male in the white Tshirt is fighting with another male in blue and is completely oblivious to anything else going on around him.

That is why the topless male can come from behind with a knife and stab him in the leg. The situation awareness on the male in the white is very very poor it is only when he feels contact from behind he reacts and faces the large group allowing him to see alot more.

After the initial stabbing incident the male with the knife is confronted by the male in the black Tshirt which reacts in a much better way. He is proactive and pre-emptive the second the male with the knife postures he strikes him and then follows it up with another strike in quick succession avoiding being stabbes and allowing him to get away safely.

This is the big think people do not realise, they often say if theres a knife just run but running is not always a viable option, there are times and situations when you can't and have to deal with the immanent danger, and this is why its important to strike first strike hard and strike fast and follow that up continuously until the threat has been dealt with and you can safely get away.

People aften worry about level of force and rightly so, but if a knife is present then it has to be viewed as life and death to which my advice is do what you need to do to survive.

Remember

"It's better to be tried by 12, than carried by 6"

DONT BE A VICTIM !!!!!

With everybody in this day and age on one social media platform or another, people have become concerned with how many followers they have!!!

But less and less people are now concerned with a different type of follower. The one that follows you in the street!!!!

Do you have the essential skills to be aware, acknowledge a threat and if need be deal with it, could you defend yourself or the people you care about if the situation arose...

be honest with yourself!!!!!

Everybody should have some self defence skills, and this doesnt mean being able to fight, self defence is much much more, fighting is the last tool we deploy.

I often get messages from people asking about our class timetable and do we run fitness classes along side the self defence classes.

The main reason being is people are often short on free time, everybody works, has family commitments and just generally has to deal with life so they often fight with the decision do i go to the gym and work on my fitness or do i go to Streetwise and work on my self defence????

💥💥💥💥But this doesnt have to be the way💥💥💥💥

All our classes start with a warm up to get those joints lubricated and ready for work, then we do 20 to 40 mins fitness training depending on the activity.

The fitness session can be anything from a circuit involving powerbags kettlebells, punch bags, calisthenics, to a good few rounds of tabata to get that heart rate going or simply a good pad session!!!!

Which ever one it is don't worry we've got your fitness training covered 🤙🏼

Female only classes...... And why you shouldn't be doing them for self defence!!!!

Bit of a controversial one this but hear me out. I strongly believe that it's so important female's train with males so that they can gain the Confidence that the system and techniques will work for them if or when they need it.
