Have you ever felt like lifting your arms is way more effort than it should be? Or maybe your shoulders and neck always feel tight, even when you’re not doing much? A lot of that discomfort often comes from a habit many of us have: keeping our shoulders lifted - all the time.

When we hold our shoulders up and lift our arms, the muscles whose job should be just to assist in lifting the arm (like the levator scapulae and upper trapezius) end up doing all the work. They’re overactive, overworked, and therefore often quite weak. So when you reach your arms overhead or try to move freely, it feels like a huge effort, and your neck ends up doing more than it should.

Here’s where it gets interesting: Lifting your arm is a team effort between the muscles surrounding your shoulder joint and your shoulder blade, a coordination known as scapulohumeral rhythm.

What does that mean?

When you lift your arm, your shoulder blade (scapula) needs to move too - not just the arm itself. Think of the scapula as a sliding plate that glides along your upper back, hugging the curve of your ribcage. As your arm goes up, the scapula should gently rotate upwards and slightly out to the side. This creates space in your shoulder joint, providing your arm freedom to move easily.

Then, when you lower your arm, the scapula rotates back down and settles again into a relaxed position. This movement should feel smooth, natural, not stiff or forced.

If the scapula isn’t moving properly - maybe because of tension, weakness, or old habits - your arm won’t have that support. The neck and top of the shoulders jump in to help, and suddenly everything feels tight, heavy, and a bit stuck.

So what can we do about it?

This weekend, while watching my one-year-old walking at the pebble beach of Brighton, I had one of those beautiful a-ha moments that only toddlers seem to inspire. I noticed how her tiny feet instinctively adapted to the uneven surface. It was incredible to see how naturally her body responded, adjusting and grounding itself through to the new texture. It reminded me just how important proprioception is, especially in our feet!

Proprioception is our body’s ability to sense its position and movement in space. When we develop good foot proprioception, we move with more confidence, stability, and awareness. It plays a huge role in balance, posture, and how we walk, run, and even stand still.

Modern life, with its flat, supportive shoes and smooth indoor floors, dulls this sensory system. That’s why it's so valuable to give our feet new challenges, like walking barefoot on irregular surfaces such as grass, sand, or yes, even pebbles! These experiences wake up the many muscles, joints, and receptors in our feet, helping us reconnect with the ground and our whole body.

You can find a few simple ways to start improving foot proprioception in this week's newsletter (Linktree in BIO).

By nurturing this deep connection to the ground, we move more efficiently, prevent injury, and develop trust in our body’s ability to adapt and respond, just like my daughter did on that beach.

This week we will be practising in our classes some foot proprioception exercises. Here’s to feet that feel and move with freedom!

Did you know that staying active is one of the best ways to ease back pain?

According to NICE guidelines, gentle movement and regular exercise are key to relieving non-specific lower back pain and helping you recover soon. That’s where Pilates comes in! By keeping your body moving and strengthening key muscles, you'll not only ease pain but also build a stronger, more flexible foundation for everyday life.

Join us in class, and let's work together to feel better, move better, and live better!

March is a month full of special days, and if you don’t believe me, just Google it and you’ll be surprised by the variety of events! I’ve become more aware of them than ever, thanks to my daughter’s nursery. They have already celebrated Pancake Day, World Book Day, International Women’s Day, and St. Patrick’s Day… and today, they are celebrating my favourite: the Spring Equinox! It also happens to be International Happiness Day and (most importantly but I am biased) my daughter’s first birthday! 😊

Additionally, this week is also Neurodiversity Week, which celebrates the different ways our brains function. I secretly love spotting ‘different brains’ in my Pilates classes. Some clients are very visual and need a demo to understand the exercises, while others prefer verbal instructions. Some close their eyes to connect with their bodies, while others instinctively copy their neighbour instead of listening to me! I love the variety, that’s what makes my teaching experience so rich and allows me to keep learning and improving to make my classes more inclusive.

Finally, March is also known in the Pilates world as March MATness! If you follow Pilates teachers on social media, you might have seen posts featuring a different Classical Pilates exercise each day of the month. As usual, I didn’t have time to keep up with the MATness, but if you haven’t either, don’t worry! You can join my classes, and we’ll (try to) perform all 31 exercises in one session. 😉

PS. Pilates Classical exercises are actually 34 instead of 31! Find a link in my newsletter to find out more about them here. Enjoy!

So, this year, I haven't had time to reflect on New Year’s resolutions or send newsletters. If you are a subscriber to my newsletter you know why....! But I’ve been working behind the scenes and have found a motto to keep me going, which I’ve decided to share in case my situation resonates with you:

Given my limited time at the moment, I need to be extra careful about what I say "yes" to. Every time I say "yes" to something, I am saying "no" to something else: time with my daughter, time to relax, or time to invest in my business. So, my motto has become to take only the steps that bring me closer to the life I want—a balanced life that allows me to spend time with my family but also focus on my passion for helping my clients move and feel better.

Some time ago, I read an article by psychologist Benjamin Hardy (DM for the link to it!), where he told the story of how the British rowing team finally achieved a gold medal after a long drought. They formulated a question to guide them: “Will it make the boat go faster?” This question informed every single decision they made before and during the race, allowing them to focus only on what would help them win the gold medal.

If you have a clear intention, such as winning a gold medal, and let every decision you make be guided by that, each choice will take you closer to your goal. According to Dr. Hardy, this is called "Implementation Intention", but you can also think of it as "a motto to guide you." The question I ask myself is: “Will this take me closer to the life I want?”

I’m sharing this with you in case it motivates you to find your own motto. For example, if you joined a Pilates class to get rid of your back pain, every time you’re deciding whether to attend class, take the stairs instead of the escalator, or go for a walk during lunch instead of staying in front of your computer, you can ask yourself, “Will this help me get rid of my back pain?” And there you have your answer 😀
