In mid-June, several of our Queensland, New South Wales and Victorian senior group volunteered to complete a Homes set-up with our charity partner, RizeUp Australia.

RizeUp provides all the practical items needed for victim-survivors of family and domestic violence to make a fresh start, including furniture and other household items that help transform empty houses into homes.

When each of our GKR teams arrived at their location, they were greeted by a RizeUp driver, an empty house and a truck filled with flatpacks and homewares. The teams set about unloading the truck, assembling the flatpacks, making beds, filling pantries and carefully decorating the space. This included fitting out children’s bedrooms and providing them with the materials needed to start at a new school.

After 4+ hours of work at each location, the transformation from house to home left a lasting memory for all involved. With the knowledge that a family would be entering their newly furnished home in the coming days, each team member took comfort in knowing that they had helped create a new beginning for someone in need.

We are incredibly grateful to RizeUp for the work they do and for the opportunity to be involved in their Homes program. We also appreciate the amazing support shown by all of our students and instructors who participate in the Stop Domestic & Family Violence Purple Belt Campaign. Your involvement means a lot, not only to RizeUp and the families they help, but also to GKR Karate as a whole.

If you would like to volunteer with RizeUp to help setting up Homes, information can be found here https://www.rizeup.com.au/volunteer

A great class tonight a nice even 20.
Started the class by welcoming Mason to his first lesson & Alfie coming along to watch.
After a quick warm up from Jane & Kevin we went into a large circle to practice basic strikes & blocks as we do with all new students just so they can watch everyone around them.
Thanks to Leigh for helping them out.
After a quick drinks break we separated into 2 groups with Kevin taking the lower grades & myself & Jane the rest.
Kevin ran through all the basics why we ran through a combination concentrating on landing each move strongly at the same time as the stance.
The next part of the lesson we concentrated on Kata.
Jane took Leigh & Natalia through Seiuchin & Empi stepping up for the World Cup why I ran through first kata & saifa with orange & green.
Peter & Lewis ran through the higher grade katas with Ian ready for the assessment
Student of the week went to Anis for finally cracking first kata & listening through the lesson (Mostly) well done.
Thanks to everyone that helped out tonight it’s always much appreciated.
Please don’t forget the seminar with Kancho on Sunday at Simon B***e School 10am-12pm.
Sensei Nick

Kancho is coming to region 20. Hope to see all there

Good Evening
A slightly quieter class tonight so I managed to work with the orange & yellow belts that will be entering their first tournament in March.
After a quick warm up we split into 3 groups.
Kevin volunteered 🤔 for the white belts & Jane worked with green & above on their kata.
My group ran through first kata & then watched Leigh & Natalia show their ring entry before practicing it themselves & performing their kata.
We managed a few minutes on Kumite drills before ending the lesson with people performing their tournament katas in front of the class.
Well trained everyone.
Student of the week went to Carly, her katas are looking sharp, keep up the good work.

A great class last night an enthusiastic 23.
First part of the class Kevin took the higher grades through the blue belt syllabus as a reminder just before the grading.
I took the white & yellow belts showing them kata & Kumite videos of our 2 junior champions just so they have a rough idea as of what it’s all about.
We then practiced reverses punch making sure you step to cover the distance while keeping your guard in place as cover.
Well done to you all it looked pretty sharp at the end.
Second part of the lesson Kevin took the lower grades through all the basic strikes while I took the others through the kicks followed by grade related katas.
Student of the week went to Prakshi her concentration & improvement every week is great to see.
Special mention to Neveah for how well she’s doing after only her second lesson.
Thanks Kevin for your help much appreciated.
See you all next week for Kumite.
Sensei Nick

Well trained tonight guys it was a good session.
Thanks Jane for the different warm up to music everyone got involved & seemed to enjoy it.
It also gave us some good ideas about how to incorporate basic techniques with music.
We then went into some basic strikes with the lower grades doing single techniques going forward with strikes & backwards with blocks all in long forward stance.
Green belts & above did the same but added a strike & block on each time & eventually ended up with 5 techniques each time they moved.
After a quick drinks break & running out of time we jumped into first kata own timings then moving up the grades to Sepai with people staying on their own grade kata once reached.
With 15 minutes to go everyone padded up for some tournament training techniques & general sparring.
Student of the week went to Lola Parker.
There were a few students that could have won it tonight but from the first bow in Lola was focused & stayed that way throughout the lesson well done.
Tournament training on the 25th January & even if you don’t fancy competing still go along & get some extra practice in.
See you next week.
Sensei Nick

A great class last night the last Wednesday class of 2025.
Played mostly games with some karate thrown in & split into 2 teams with families & friends on opposite sides just to make it more competitive.
It’s been a great year & you guys have made me proud either through hard training, gradings or competitions especially at the Nationals 🥇 🥈 🥉
Thanks to everyone that’s helped me out it’s much appreciated.

It was a great honour to award this year’s trophy’s to

Most Improved Student to Leigh Parker-Collier.
She’s stepped up massively this year helping out with the younger students, passing her assessment for Brown Belt & winning medals at tournaments (Gold & Silver at this year’s Nationals)

Junior Student of the Year to Natalia Fous
As with Leigh, Natalia has had a fantastic year with gradings & especially competitions (Gold & Silver at this year’s Nationals)
She listens in class & wants to learn hence why she won Student of the Year at Sensei Geoff’s class on Monday Night.

Lastly

Student of the Year goes to Peter Costi
Those that know Peter understand what he’s been through over the last few years & he still comes back training as soon as he can always giving 💯 in all the lessons he trains at.
He always has time to help others out & be a friendly shoulder to lean on so this award has been very much earned.

Now look forward to a hard earned break & what your goals are for 2026 although mine for you are to enter the competition’s next year with the World Cup only a few months away.

Thanks for a great 2025 you made me proud 😁
