1st Team Match Report. Pott Shrigley 1’s (197) beat Tintwistle 2’s (137) by 60 runs.

The view from the boundary at Pott Shrigley cricket club is dominated by two hills. Behind the pavilion, The Nab: bringer of weather, sending down pleasant aromas of gorse, shading the ground as evening draws in during the second innings on a Saturday afternoon. The second, and the larger of the two, Andrew’s K**b: the vista as you look across the ground from the pavilion, farmers’ fields dominating its slopes and the provider of this report’s metaphor.
For at 6-2 with 10 balls gone the hill we had to climb was the size of the latter. Fortunately for us Phil and AJ had brought their hiking boots and set off. A 48 run partnership got us to base camp before a stumble. At 64-5 Ceri James & James Samarji took on the mantel and calmly added another 73 to allow for some low stress late innings hitting.
197 gave us some leeway with the bowling. There were some nerves when their number 3 started hitting out but once the James father and son combined to remove him, the mountain turned to a molehill as Phil picked up 6 wickets whilst Tyler kept it tight at the other end.
Over the hills to top of the table Chapel next week.

Is brat summer over? Whilst Charli XCX was posing this question on the Other Stage at Glastonbury last night, she needed only to take glance at Play-Cricket to realise no, it’s not. On the other Other Stage - Old Glossop CC Cricket Ground - Pott Shrigley took on a young team, possibly nervously awaiting their SATs results.
Our very own 365 party girls Phil and Shaun opened the festivities with 360 hitting - a quick 50 each as Pott raced to 150 with almost half the innings left. A huge total looked on the cards. In the end, 195 all out felt like a good score — slightly under par for the position they were in, but certainly defendable on a pitch offering inconsistent bounce.
The bowling still needed to be good, we obliged. Morgan and Tyler the pick of the bunch, keeping things tight and picking up key wickets in the heat. Credit, too, to Old Glossop’s youthful lineup, who showed plenty of promise for the future. But on this particular evening, the spotlight belonged to Pott.
So no — brat summer isn’t over. If anything, it’s thriving. Because nothing says “main character energy” like a group of grown men piling on runs against a team of teenagers.

1st XI Match Report
Pott Shrigley 1sts lost to Newton by 22 runs
This game was a little like gout. The first innings was a feast, red wine, shellfish by the dozen, getting dehydrated in the sun as we kept Newton to what felt like a chaseable target, life was good. Second innings started well, but then the toe turned red, middle order wickets fell, the pain.
Newton won the toss and batted first on a flat, true pitch. They made it to 157-8, paced largely by a composed knock from one of their juniors. He looked nailed on for a 50 until cruel fate intervened: his partner was run out with three balls to go, stranding him at the non-striker’s end on 49. Brutal. He’d already raised his bat poor lad.
Our bowling was good. Andy Matheson bowled well: 12 overs, 27 runs, tight as you like, squeezing at the start. Morgan Whiting hit his stride too, claiming three wickets and threatening more. There were chances and nearly moments, but 157 felt below par.
Our chase began brightly. Dunny and Fletch got us off to a flyer, boundaries flowing and spirits high. For a while it felt like a comfortable chase. Then came the dreaded middle order collapse - wickets falling in clusters, dot balls creeping in, pressure mounting. The scoreboard froze, and Newton sensed their moment.
Enter Alex Hart. His late hitting gave us real hope, dragging the game back from the brink and putting some doubt into the opposition. But with too much left to do and not enough partners, the innings closed on 135. So close, yet 22 runs short.
And then, there’s the real headline: another joins the League Gout XI. Another has fallen victim to the noble affliction. The selection committee is considering a special cap presentation for anyone turning up to training in sandals and a grimace.
Tough loss. But a lot to build on, we go again.
New players always welcome, whatever your age or ability. Training is Wednesday nights at 18:30 (apart from this Wednesday), matches every Saturday, and gout is optional. Come get involved.
