1st XI Match Report
Pott Shrigley 1sts lost to Newton by 22 runs
This game was a little like gout. The first innings was a feast, red wine, shellfish by the dozen, getting dehydrated in the sun as we kept Newton to what felt like a chaseable target, life was good. Second innings started well, but then the toe turned red, middle order wickets fell, the pain.
Newton won the toss and batted first on a flat, true pitch. They made it to 157-8, paced largely by a composed knock from one of their juniors. He looked nailed on for a 50 until cruel fate intervened: his partner was run out with three balls to go, stranding him at the non-striker’s end on 49. Brutal. He’d already raised his bat poor lad.
Our bowling was good. Andy Matheson bowled well: 12 overs, 27 runs, tight as you like, squeezing at the start. Morgan Whiting hit his stride too, claiming three wickets and threatening more. There were chances and nearly moments, but 157 felt below par.
Our chase began brightly. Dunny and Fletch got us off to a flyer, boundaries flowing and spirits high. For a while it felt like a comfortable chase. Then came the dreaded middle order collapse - wickets falling in clusters, dot balls creeping in, pressure mounting. The scoreboard froze, and Newton sensed their moment.
Enter Alex Hart. His late hitting gave us real hope, dragging the game back from the brink and putting some doubt into the opposition. But with too much left to do and not enough partners, the innings closed on 135. So close, yet 22 runs short.
And then, there’s the real headline: another joins the League Gout XI. Another has fallen victim to the noble affliction. The selection committee is considering a special cap presentation for anyone turning up to training in sandals and a grimace.
Tough loss. But a lot to build on, we go again.
New players always welcome, whatever your age or ability. Training is Wednesday nights at 18:30 (apart from this Wednesday), matches every Saturday, and gout is optional. Come get involved.
